I heard this when I was picking my kids up from school.  Didn't believe it till some of the mums said it was true.   Steve Irwin was a great ambassador for conservation and wildlife.  We used to love watching "The Crocodile Hunter".  Deepest sympathy to Terri Irwin and the kids.

Steve Irwin killed by stingray
September 04, 2006 12:00am
Herald-Sun
Article from: Reuters

THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead. It is believed he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when it happened.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality today at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

It is understood Irwin was killed around noon, Eastern Australian time.

A source said Irwin was already dead when his body was brought on to the island.

His  body was being flown to Cairns Hospital in North Queensland for formal identification.

It's believed Mr Irwin's American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania.

Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!".

The father of two's Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world on cable network Discovery.

He has also starred in movies and has developed the Australia Zoo wildlife park, north of Brisbane, which was started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin.

Was never a fan, but he lived his life to the full. At the end of the day, that's all one can hope for.

Terrible news.

I thought he was a fantastic bloke and to see and feel the atmosphere at Australia Zoo earlier this year it is fantastic.

He will be sadly missed.

It's very sad indeed especially since he's left a young family behind.

What P1sses me off is the media now turning it into a circus. Especially when the say he was "attacked" by a stingray. We all know the stingray was just trying to get away and in the process hit him with the barb. It didn't hunt him down and strike like a shark FFS! :banghead

Oh well at least we know the world will always be a better place whilst the Sunrise Ambulance chasers broadcast on location.  :banghead

He knew what he was doing and the risks he took, doesn't make  it any less tragic. He will be a great loss for the widlife of this worldand the Australian environment.
Lets hope his legacy lives on.
Like he said on a Denton interview, it was people that scare him and not animals and I tend to agree.

Tiga, as per the media and the 'attacked' terminology, I am sure anyone with a modicum of sense would realise Irwins views on the situation.
Then again I doubt the sense of a lot of people these days.
