Gaspar to be offered a one year deal

Gaspar in line for deal
05 September 2006   Herald-Sun
Jon Pierik

RICHMOND is tipped to offer veteran defender Darren Gaspar a new one-year deal.

The Tigers met Gaspar last week and a decision on his future is expected to be made either today or tomorrow.

Asked whether the dual All-Australian was a strong chance to be at Punt Rd next year, Tigers director of football Greg Miller said last night: "Of course, absolutely he is.

"He had a great year last year. I think he ran close to the best-and-fairest. This year he has had injury after injury. Sometimes injury is a product of age, sometimes bad luck. We hope it's bad luck."

If Gaspar, 30, returns, it's expected to be at a far reduced price than his current deal.

Gaspar managed just eight games this year.

Veteran Andrew Kellaway, who is yet to be offered a new deal, will also have his future decided within days.

Staggering :gobdrop

On balance if you ask who's been the better player this season - I would have thought it's a no-brainer.

I'll just add confusing and leave it at that  :-\

thats not the issue wp

the fact is that long term, and short term, chubba, with all due respect, does not fit todays footy. chuba is not a kpp, even though he can play tall at times, he is a hbflanker. what terry wants are fast thinking and fast running half back flankers. we have joel, paddy, raines, sugar, polo, white, etc etc who can play fast running defensive roles.  what we lack is a backman who can hold down a power fwd. gaspar is th eonly one we have, the only one, who has been plagued by injury.  next yr after another solid preseason, we and terry would hope gaspars luck will change. schulz may drop down back also along with a recover thursfield. with joel raines paddy etc down back, there is no room for chubba.

if terry makes this call i congratulate him for making a tough but right decision. u cant keep an old player on a list just for sentimental reasons if he does not fit team structure anymore.  i can guarantee u if we had another young bloke who could hold a power fwd, gas would be gone too

Agree with most of that X but........... going by 2006 form and form only Chubba has had a far better season without the injury problems (prior to the hamstring of course)  than Gaspar has had.

There seems alot of assumptions going on "if Gaspar's luck with injury changes" what if doesn't?

I actually find it hard to seperate the 2 of them to be honest.

For me it's got nothing to do with sentimental reason - it is about who would be the better option in 2007 for the RFC if only one can stay and one has to go and for mineI'd be keeping Chubba.

In a perfect world I'd keep both of them because 1/ we may need the insurance back-up and 2/ whether this is good thing or not both of them are in top 30 players.

i agree wp, yes, chubba has had a better yr, but does that mean he is better  4 us next yr than gas, not really. we dont know really what terry has in mind.

but in a perfect world, we would have 2 to 3 young kpp in defence coming through and we would get rid of both gas and chubba

imo  gas, chubba, rodan, schulz, hall, tiv, moore, jackson should all be let go

and guys like cogs, tuck, hyde and krak should be used as possible trade bait to improve our list

Schulz???? Are you kidding X?? He's a keeper for sure. Developing into a solid forward option. No good in defence, but has a great leap, takes a strong mark and can kick goals. Why would you want to let that go?

we have cleve and limbach coming through plus whoever we get in this draft.

the reason i say this is because imo i dont feel jay has the work ethic and desire to bust his pooper to get to the top. yes he is a gr8 kick and good mark, but is as lazy as they come

Agree WP that Chubba on form deserves to stay ahead of Gas but the decision isn't being made on form but rather position and who we have on our list to play those positions as X pointed out. Lack of KP defenders means Gas stays (and that's assuming he accepts a one-year deal) while an abundance of mid-sized running defenders means Chubba is replaceable. Chubba like his brother is courageous as they come but foot-skills and rebounding run are more important attributes of the modern backman and in a couple of years young guys like JON will be the future of our defence. I agree with X that Gas would be gone too if Thursfield hadn't done his knee. Gas stays temporarily almost by default.

Jackstar, Didn't he play mostly in defence on the weekend? As I said, he's no good as a defender but up forward he's been reasonably solid this season.

he looked very lazy and not interested on the weekend. he lost me then and there. mguane with all his faults came on and was busting his guts trying his heart out. i reckon mguane will be better value 4 us long term

they tried him down back because he was being killed up fwd and was playing lazy pathetic footy. when shifted down back he was worse and then mguane came on 4 him and showed jay what endeavor and trying means. jay is taking his afl career 4 granted
