Was trading Justin Murphy dumb?
« on: July 02, 2004, 11:38:52 PM »
Murphy kicking 5 goals tonight for the Dons reminded me of two things. First him kicking 5 against us last year for Carlton ::) and secondly that we drafted him with our first round draft pick in November 1993 (pick #3) then traded him to Carlton after only two years and 12 games with us for Ben Harrison (74 games for us). Another great Robert Walls decision?

Thoughts?

He also kicked 5 goals for us on debut against Essendon. I remember being pretty excited about him as a long term player. Grew up supporting Richmond too. Seemed to go awry after his racial vilification spat. Can't remember who he said had a go at him.
Must have been a problem somehow because we were only the first to off-load him. Carlton had 2 goes and still didn't keep him.

Yeah FF, he has been the journey man. Now at his 4th club. David Parkin seemed to get the best out of him at Carlton. I think from memory he left Carlton the first time even though they didn't want him to go due to salary cap constraints which is ironic since they were cheating the system with other players anyway. After that it was downhill until Sheeds got him. Murphy is doing alright at the bombers although he fits in well as they are now a bunch of frontrunners.

Murphy has had a good first year at each club he has played for.  See how he goes in his second year at the bummers before judging him.

Always going to play well at Essendon as they have the hard nuts in Johnson(both), Soloman etc so Murphy can run free and into space to RECIEVE the ball. All teams need them and he is doing it very well so far for the bombers.

i think we did the right thing in getting rid of him, he was stale and needed a change.

He would have been another Joel Bowden, had he stayed at Richmond, imo.

the fact that he has played at 4 different clubs shows how bad the guy is.

Im glad we traded him, he is a weak receiver.
