Flys or Mozzies (the great aussie summer debate)
« on: November 10, 2006, 03:26:14 PM »
Looks like the summer flys have arrived(as I have found out today), driving you round the twist. The question is what would you rather be wiped from the face of the earth ?

Flys are like a form of mental torture when your'e out and about, they just drive you bananas.

Mozzies on the otherhand are sneaky little frockers which sneak up and bite hell out of you and you suffer for the next few days (If your'e like me they really find you tasty), OR just keep you awake with that anoying squeel in your ear at night, but you can't find the cretins.
They really wreck the summer nights while the sun is going down, while you are trying to have a barbie or a few cool drinks outside on those hot summer nights.

It's sort of like when you were a kid, in the summer cricket was the best but in winter footy was the best couldn't make your'e mind up.

Well even though flys drive me nuts(almost to insanity at times), it's mozzies for me - 2 of the most useless lifeforms on the planet for mine. :whistle

Loath mozzies more as when it's been hot all day and you want to go outside and cool off at night they are waiting around for a feeding frenzy.

2 of the most useless lifeforms on the planet for mine. :whistle

But both still not a useless lifeform as a Pies supporter  ;D.

Seeing I am allergic to Mossie bites (blow up like a bloody balloon) - their extinction would be greatly appreciated :thumbsup

Flies, whilst a nuisance, don't create as much havoc as mozzies.  Mozzies suck your blood, leave you with an itchy spot, annoy the heck out of you buzzing in your ear in the middle of the night and spread such disease as Ross River Fever.  They also pass on diseases to dogs.

Juewlz, u would know how bad Midgees are up there.

I went for a kick at dusk in an oval and ended up with 32 seperate bites.
The little prix dig under ure skin and pee - thats what makes it itch.
Had to go to docs and get cortisone shot and tablets to knock me out for 2 days cos it was like chicken pox.

I can stand Mozzies.

Cant stand flies. When I lived in Sydney flies were unbearable. I lived at Coogee and in the 2 min walk from my place to the beach I'd have at least a dozen flies on me. Is there a north/south thing here? Do flies prefer dry summers and mozzies wet summers?

Mozzies love wet summers. Love the tropics. A number of WWII vets fighting up north came back with malaria.

Mozzies are just really annoying. I think I'd prefer flys, except when you swallow them or they go up your nose...

Yeah midgees are terrible.  You go outside late afternoon and just get attacked - worse than mozzies.

Are they the same as the 'sandflies' they have further north (cairns way) bout half the size of a flea.

Lived there for six months, went out crabbing in the mangroves a few times 40 degrees 100 % humidity trackky pants and long sleeve top and a fire going to keep the effers at bay.

After my first attack which the local indigenous found rather amusing - Learnt the valuable lesson - DO NOT SCRATCH - JUST DONT DO IT.

You only get sandflies where you have an estuary open to the sea nearby not much you can do about them except move house or pester the local council to blanket spray the area.

As for mossies interfering with the barbie try a tablespoon of lemon trix (or similiar lemon detergent) in a white plate containing water covering the bottom.

As for the flies if your barbie is in the backyard go and s**t on the front lawn :lol
