Yeah or Neah - 1. Rory Hilton
« on: July 06, 2004, 07:09:07 PM »
As the season is now about judging who stays or goes at the end of the year, I thought we might have a look at each player who's on a knife's edge and get opinions over the next 8 weeks.

So should Rory stay or go and why?

He should go.

Rory is far too inconsistant and his good games are getting even more further apart as time goes on. The thing that worries me a bit about Rory is that he is one of these guys that likes to perform around contract time and he very well may do again this time. All I can say to the football dept is please don't be fooled again.

It's time to go.................................................................RORY

I would try and trade Rory and if that wasn't successful I'd de-list him.

The good games are to few and far between. He played well against Hawthorn and we had to wait until last Saturday for him to play a resasonable game. Where's he been for the last 8 weeks?

He also appears to have no desire or hunger as he appears to just go through the motions. Coupled with this his second efforts are practically non existent and as result he comes across as a lazy footballer. He seems to be another one of those players who has plenty of talent but not the required application.

The RFC has rewarded these types for far too long and it is time to bring out the big broom and sweep them out the door. We need committed players who have the hunger, desire and want to be successful.

So long Rory!

No chance.
Rory only seems to put in when his ass is on the line.
When he got his chance against the Hawks in his first game back, and against his old side last week when surely he was in line to be dropped.
In between he was bad to disgraceful.
I reckon he's unfit and far too slow for AFL level. He has played nearly every position on the field without making any his own.

No.  He's taking us nowhere.

Apart from the first half of 2001 and a few games here and there, he has shown very liitle.

Lacks the intensity, desire and commitment to play at this level.

As harsh as it may sound, he's just taking the place of a young player who would jump at the chance to be playing.

I have to agree with everyone's sentiments. One good game in a blue moon isn't what we need and he's been in the system for 7-8 years. I can't see him as trade value on his own but maybe we can chuck him in to get another bigger trade over the line as he'll be delisted in any case IMO.

An overwhelming and unanimous vote of Neah from OER.

Looks like McVeigh throwing Rory into the fence  >:( right in front of me will be the end of Rory for the year and most likely his time at Richmond. McVeigh should go big time for that gutless act!

Indeed MT, nobody likes to see a career end like that, If it in fact does. He was crying on the bench and through one of his boots into the construction area. But within the sadness of it all it must be remembered that he has had ample opportunity to impress over the last three years and has not cemented himself within the side and that is an indictment on himself and the pure ineptitude of those in the coaching ranks. I have a strong suspicion that Wayne Campbell will also pull the pin at the close of the season.

Bad way to end a career but the writing was on the wall anyway. I would have definitely got rid of him at the end of the year.

From the HUN site:

Tiger's season over
By Emily Power
July 12, 2004

TIGER Rory Hilton will miss the rest of the season after tearing his right
anterior cruciate ligament.

Hilton will have a knee reconstruction this week - the second of his career
- after Richmond confirmed the worst yesterday.

A dejected Hilton wept into a towel on the interchange bench and threw his
boots into the MCG construction area in frustration with the realisation
his season was over, and his career in jeopardy.

Hilton, out of contract at the end of the year, has had to fight his way
into the Richmond side after stints with Coburg in the VFL this season.

The Tigers picked up Hilton from Brisbane in 1998 after he was taken at No.
3 in the 1996 draft.

The 25-year-old utility has played 72 games for the Tigers and was making a
claim for his retention on the list with strong performances in recent
weeks.

"It's terrible news for Hilts," Richmond football manager Greg Hutchison
said yesterday.

"He saw a surgeon this morning and he'll have surgery later this week."

Hilton hobbled to the bench in the third quarter after landed awkwardly on
his right knee when he clashed with Essendon's Mark McVeigh over the
boundary line.

He had surgery to repair his left ACL when he was 16, and has also had
shoulder surgery.

The Tigers have lost skipper Wayne Campbell for 1-3 weeks after he
dislocated his left collarbone when he was heavily collected by young
Bomber Kepler Bradley.
.....

Gorrrrne. Bad luck Hilts.
My parents bought me a Richmond jumper and enrolled me in a junior footy clinic in 1981...look at me now.

Im one who isnt sad to see the back of him. What is sooking for on the bench? Did the knee injury make his career over?

Sorry but we need consistent performers and guys who can at least hit a target here and there....There was no chance he was every going to stay long before the Essendon game.

I doubt we could trade him. Hate to be like this but its time that we stopped with mediocrity.

Spot on Om21, i feel sorry that Rory has done his knee. But his form was too late to warrant him keeping his spot on the list.

It has just confirmed that he will not be at the club next season, i am sure that he has made plenty of money out of the club over the past few years. I am sick and tired of feeling sorry for these guys. We bleed for the club, its their turn!!

Agree fellow OERians,

While anyone with any decency would surely feel compassionate toward rory's current dilemma
it's still fact that we need to cull the crop and his injury puts him in pole position.

Its tuff at the top level.

Have the axemen forgotten about Rory? Are they uncomfortable delisting a player that's recently done a knee or is he in the next wave of good-byes? We delisted dragga last year but then put him on the rookie list. Just curious what happens if he is delisted yet still is recovering from an injury due to his "job". I'd presume we pay for his medical and physio expenses until he's fully right.

Most thought he should go before he did his knee and I don't see how anything has changed.

It's really bad luck that he's injured himself, but this isn't a half-way house for highly unmotivated footballers.

It's nothing personal, he just doesn't cut it at this level.
