In a world where the sport has been bastardised and corporatised by the powers that be, humane stories like that just let you know that there are some people in the world who still care. On ya Jake  :bow

If only all our players, especially those with supposedly more natural ability than Kingy, played with his intensity and tenacity.

"Jake King, recovering from an ankle reconstruction, works the mitts during Richmond's first to third-year player training at Ocean Grove."

That's going to limit Jake's preseason if he's had an ankle reconstruction.

Was that news to you to MT?

I thought I had missed something as I hadn't heard anything around the traps.

Jakey didn't play the last few rounds at either AFL or VFL level including the VFL Elim final. IIRC we knew he'd hurt an ankle but yeah it is news to me that he required a full reco. We saw with Cotch, Connors and Gus this year and Simmo in 2007 that serious ankle/foot injuries can write off preseasons and a large chunk of the season proper. Not good for Kingy who you would've thought would've needed a strong 2009 to regain some cred he lost this year. He's signed a new 2 year deal but the word going around was the 2ne year was based on his performance in 2009. Hard to perform at your best if you're sitting in the stands or coming off hardly a preseason. Cotch is a freak but even he admits he was limited to just 50-60% game time. Connors didn't make an appearance at AFL until the last month and Gus' year was a write off stuck in the VFL. We even had some supporters wanting Gus delisted based on that woeful Elimination final.

lol a bit both wasn't after half time  :-\.

Let's say it won't be a day Gus will want to look back fondly on although he had a few Richmond teammates in the same boat.

Yep doesn't sound good for Jake.

Oh well if any player has the determination to go against the odds I am sure Jake will be in there fighting and angry

Tiger King regains his bite

IT WOULD be fair to say that Jake King had an up-and-down year in 2008.

A great start faded into injury problems with all the attendant frustrations.

“Yeah, it wasn’t too flash, and it all came from my back,” he told richmondfc.com.au.

“I did my hamstring three times, and they were all back-related.
“Then when I tried to come back I ended up doing my ankle, I tore all the ligaments and the muscles.

“I just had a shocking second half of the year.”

However, that is all behind the 24-year-old as he prepares for 2009 with his injuries under control.

“They’re all good now, no dramas at all. It just means I’ve got extra work to do to look after myself,” King said.

“They give me the program, and I’ll stick by whatever they say, but then I also have to do all this body maintenance stuff to make sure everything holds up, so that makes it a bit more work.

“Physio, massage, stretching, pilates, ice baths – all that. It just doesn’t stop.”

Just as the physical front provided highs and lows, so did King’s form last season.

“I’m probably my harshest critic – there were a lot of things I didn’t like,” King said.

“There were a few good things that came out of it, but a lot of it I didn’t like.

“There’s a lot that I still need to work on, and you get really frustrated because of the second half of the year, when I didn’t get the chance to work on things.

“Towards the end of the year is where you want to actually polish things off, and my season was over.”

But that disappointment has driven King to focus on what he wants to achieve during the pre-season.

“I want my skills to improve enormously, my engine to become a lot bigger [so] I can push through physically and mentally, but I’d still like it to make it that little bit easier for me,” he said.

“And keeping my mouth shut – yeah, there’s plenty there to work on.”

King also wants to take his defensive skills to a higher level and has concrete targets to achieve in the 2009 season proper.

"I want to play all the games, and I want to make an impact on the competition and in the club,” King said.

“I want to be someone that the boys can rely on week to week – no flashy stuff, just does the job.

“Just keep having a crack.”

Reagardless of his downfalls as a players such as his aerial strength and questionable decision making, you have to admire Kingy for his attitude. I love how he plays. His attack on the ball and player is unquestionable. Anyone who does not take a step back against madmen like Hall, Gerig and Brown has to be admired. Everything his has got he fought for, he did everything the hard way.

I wish we could inject his attitude into more of our more naturally gifted players - what a team we would have then!
