Suggestion: Pettifer -v- Hird
« on: July 09, 2004, 08:41:31 AM »
Seeing that Pettifer seems to be playing better off the HB line.

Would it be worth playing him on James HIrd tomorrow as a challenge?

It may give us a indication of where he is at.

Thoughts?

Kayne would be giving away a few centimetres and kilos to Hird in that match-up although Bowden did the same last week on Jonathan Brown so it's not a no-no. I'd guess it depends on want you want for Pettifer's footy education. At the moment he seems to be doing well across half-back; mind you it's only been for three games. Do we change that when he's just finally found his feet at this level? I'm not sure. Hird would definitely take Kayne away from our defence 50. One thing Kayne would learn from Hird is how much and hard he runs and to which spots on the ground and around contests he runs to. I'm not against the idea given the season is for experimentation and finding out who should remain on our list but if Jackstar says Joel's got the job then Joel's got the job  ;).

I wouldn't do it. I'd leave him on the flank for the rest of the year to allow him to improve his consistency and confidence at this level. Through pettifer's short career he has shown me that his major problems are with his mind. He's a person that needs a few personal wins or victories, he doesn't know that he can play at this level yet. By leaving him in a position where he's at least holding his own and doing a few good things he will stabalise and become more confident.

That was the only reason I raised it - I reckon Kayne could learn so much from playing on Hird.

One thing I would keep him doing is the kick ins - 50+ metres works for me ;)

But I do agree if Jackstar says Joel's the man then Joel's the man  ;D

Bowden hasn't done too bad on Hird.  Hird has left the ground sick.  Pettifer limped off - hope he's ok.
