It .... appears highly unlikely that Richmond's Jay Schulz will head to the Dogs.

I honestly can't believe that we would trade Schulz with Polak in the never zone at this minute.
What is he going to do make a miracle recovery. Or is there something not being told.
It will be a big loss to us if he leaves. We have done the hard yards with him only to let him go.
I don't understand why or what for.
Is it that Terry still is bleeding Bulldog tears?
I peed off if it happens. :banghead

No way I'd want to trade Schulz to the Dogs anyway now that their 1st round pick is gone to Ayce Cordy and their 2nd selection isn't til about pick 30.

Hansen is massively overrated, I hope they get him
A straight swap for Farren Ray wouldn't be far off the mark, they're both hopeless

Greg Denham now says today Schulz is likely to stay at Richmond given he's signed a new 2-year contract and there's been little interest since Monday.

Someone needs to find the worse and smelliest pair of socks and put them in this Greg Denhams mouth.
I think it would fit right. :wallywink

Probably because he's been newly contracted in the past 2 weeks, which sends a pretty clear message.  :wallywink

Schulz shooting for better 2009
richmondfc.com.au
By Mic Cullen
Sun 14 December, 2008

FOR RICHMOND defender Jay Schulz, 2009 is all about bridging the gap between his good performances and his poor ones.

The 23-year-old played 18 games this year and, although he felt it was his most consistent season since his 2003 debut, he knows there's plenty of scope to improve again.

"I'm happy, but not over-excited," he told richmondfc.com.au. "My expectation on myself this year was to play all 22 games and that didn’t happen, but that’s footy – nothing ever works out the way you want it to.

"Because I’ve been so up and down in previous years – one week good, the next week absolute rubbish – I need to make my lows not as low, trying to find the middle, which I think I have improved on this year."

Forty-nine appearances in five years, including just four in 2005 after an early-season ankle injury, encouraged Schulz to re-assess what he could offer the side as it looked to rebound from finishing on the bottom of the ladder.

He gave coach Terry Wallace an option in the key positions or a rebounding role, his size complementing the side's running backmen as well as teammates working to nullify opposition targets.

Schulz believes his fitness was something that may have held him back in previous years, but has got it to a level that encourages him to have a greater impact on games.

"Fitness has always been the biggest thing that I’ve always tried to improve, so I’ll just keep working with that," he said.

"I'm starting to realise as well that if I play consistent footy, I can have a big impact on how we’re going."

After three wins and a draw in 2007, the Tigers knew the first half of the new campaign was going to be tough.

Two wins, two losses and another draw came in the first five rounds, before they slipped to Hawthorn, St Kilda and Geelong.

But round nine's victory over Essendon showed an important resolve and a second triumph over the Bombers (in round 16) was flanked by wins over West Coast and the Brisbane Lions.

Suddenly, the Tigers were in finals contention.

"We battled early – we had a really tough draw in the first half of the year, and we knew that was the case, and we knew the second half of the year would be our opportunity," Schulz said.

"Our expectation was to play finals and we were almost there. We were only half a win off."

And Schulz is confident his teammates, under new captain Chris Newman, can make a charge for September this time around.

The belief is similar to the philosophy he has for himself – the potential is there, it's just a matter of finding the best of it.

"We definitely have to make the finals next year, and I don’t see any reason why we can’t," he said.

"We’ve got that much talent in our side. The boys are starting to grow together, and we’ve got games into a lot of younger players now.

"The second half of the year showed that we’re starting to understand how each other plays and we’re starting to stick to our disciplines that we’ve put in place."

A fair enough assessment on himself from Sarge. It seems coming within a whisker of being traded to Port has given him that kick up the backside he needed. He's also now going to have more pressure on him from below with more young talls on our list pushing for spots in the side. The days of remaining on our list for years because you were one of the few talls we had are disappearing. Sarge needs to step up even further in 2009 as a senior player. As someone else mentioned once before on here it feels like he has been around much longer than someone who is still only 23.

Tell you what though, the opportunity is there for him to stand up this year, with Richo out of the forward line for chunks of the game and Polly out of action, either the spot as FF or the CHF/CHB flexible postional player is up for grabs.

C'mon Jay.

AFL FOOTBALLERS FROM THE YORKE PENINSULA - Jay Schulz
Yorke Peninsula Country Times
Wednesday, 11 March 2009

In a series of articles, YPCT sportswriter Peter Argent chats to each of the former local junior footballers who are currently on AFL lists and playing at this highest level of our national code. This week he speaks with Richmond big man Jay Schulz.

Image Twenty-three-year-old Jay Schulz (he turns 24 in April) has just completed his seventh AFL pre-season, noting a strategic change in the type of training the Tigers coaching staff is putting the squad through.

“There has been a focus on repeat speed training and power-based exercises,” Schulz explained, talking about the 2009 pre-season.

“They were pretty intense sessions but not as long as in previous years, and then when we did the endurance running the playing group handled it a lot better.

“Interestingly, we didn’t go on a pre-season camp this year.”

Schulz’s pre-season was interrupted slightly with a strained posterior cruciate ligament taking him away from the main training for six weeks, but, pleasingly, he was still able to return to a running program after just a week.

After playing the majority of his career as a key forward, Schulz has been used across the back half from last season and sees most of his football in the defensive area this year.

“The coaching staff believes I read the game reasonably well, and my kicking skills are solid enough to frequently hit targets in front of me,” Schulz said.

“We have a good group working together in defence, but they also suggested I can be thrown forward as a pinch hitter or even relieve Richo (Matthew Richardson) on a wing.”

Schulz, who played 18 games last winter, believes 2008 was his most consistent year, and his football is getting to the stage where the difference between the peaks and troughs are a lot less dramatic.

“These days if I’m not having a big impact, I won’t be completely ineffective,” he said.

“I’m pretty lucky to be still around the club and am glad the Tigers had faith in me.

“Hopefully, I can take another step up in my game this year.”

On Richmond’s ambitions for the 2009 winter, Schulz explained the philosophy at Punt Road is to improve on the previous year. As they finished in ninth position in 2008, he suggested the club would have underachieved if they don’t play finals this year.

His personal ‘09 goals are pretty simple.

“I want to play every game I’m fit and available for, and be perceived as an automatic selection by the coaching staff,” he said.

“As all our group is fighting fit, it will be pretty tough for spots, so I’ll need to perform well week in, week out.”

Since his move into the back line, Schulz paid a compliment to the Tigers’ defensive coach, former Kangaroos premiership defender David King.

“Kingy is a vibrant character who is very black and white about his beliefs and strong with his praise.

“It has been a challenge playing in defence, and I’ve had to learn different skills.

“Kingy has been good, educating me about whether to play inside or outside my opposing forward, depending on whether I’m playing on a big or a small.”

Schulz spent 10 days on Yorke Peninsula over the festive season — pleasingly, because harvest was completed he was able to spend time at the family shack, grabbing a feed of fish and crabs as well as finding heaps of scallops.

Finally, on the Tigers’ recruitment of former West Coast Brownlow medallist Ben Cousins, Schulz has nothing but praise.

“So far he’s been great, slotted into our system very well. While he’s come back on a modified program, he’s as fit as a fiddle.

“He was a champion for the Eagles before things went south and we’re looking for him to have a strong impact, if he reproduces some of that form.”

For Schulz, who achieved his 50 AFL game milestone early last year and now has 67 senior games to his credit, this is another important year.

Good to hear. Hopefully the penny has dropped for Sarge. It looks like after the Shepparton game he's been given the FF spot to start the season with Cleve still coming back from injury. Another good game up on the Gold Coast will probably give Sarge the opportunity to seal up the FF spot in the real stuff. He won't have Richo up there anymore to crash into lol.

Some might say that we have heard this for years with Jay but like it says in the article he went some way towards that happening in '08.
It's actually a pretty refreshing read as he knows it's consistency that he requires to establish his position in the 22.
Hopefully this is the year that he can because it's pretty apparent that he knows others are closing as said below.
He has to take the opportunity. Now or never for Jay Schulz.

Bump.

Schulz might finally live up to this 2-year old article.
