Yeah or Neah - 6. Mark Chaffey
« on: July 13, 2004, 08:48:50 PM »
As the season is now about judging who stays or goes at the end of the year, thought we might have a look at each player who is on a knife's edge and get opinions until the end of the season.

What should happen to Chafs - kept or let go - and why?

Let go, although I think he might have another year of his contract which means that we will have to pay some of his wages next year ala David Bourke

Was a handy player over the last couple of years with his strong marking in the defensive 50, but we havent seen any of that this season and that was his strength.

Turns is over way too much and really stuggles to hit a target, he is also too slow and is really been giving me the sh&ts this season.

Must let go, although under Wallace may reinvent himself.

Hasn't done himself any favours this year. Though he was quite good the last couple years.

It all depends on how many we have to let go.

These are the blokes i'd let go before i'd let go of Chaffey:

D. Kellaway
Rogers
Blumfield
Nicholls
Houlihan
Weller
Morrison
Rodan
Hilton
Fletcher
Marsh
and possibly Campbell, Zantuck and Fiora

I spose we have room to get rid of Chaffey....

Trade - I reckon you'd get a 2nd round pick for Chaffey.

Some Clubs just drool over the prospect of a left footer. We have so many that we don't care ;D

It is his disposal and lack of vision that really hurts us. This year it has been more pronounced but it has always been there. How he has managed to remain in the side this season is beyond belief

For the last couple of years he was a reliable small/mid-sized backman who as bulluss mentioned was very good marking above his head thus played alot taller. However this year his form has dropped right away and his disposal now is awful. Like WP I can't believe he hasn't been sent back to Coburg.

We have too many of his type on our list (Chaffey, Fiora, Blumfield, Hilton, Pettifer, Hyde and even Tivs on recent form), so apart from Blumfield and Hilton who will obviously be going and don't have any trade value, we won't lose out trading one or two more and instead hopefully gain a decent pick in return. In Chaffey's case I'd still reckon many people from other clubs and the media still rate him so as WP mentioned we could get a pick in the 20's for him.

Overall view - Trade.

Let's get rid of him. We must end the Laffy > Daffy > Chaffey dynasty!  ;D

He is a very limited player, however overated by the football world.  He is exactly the type that we should be trading.  Severly lacks vision, awareness and evasiveness.  If we get sentimental with the Chaffey's of this world then i can't see how we are going to improve.  We must trade some of our ordinary players who have some market value for draft picks.  Chaffey, Kellaway, Fiora, Rodan, Zantuck, hyde etc. are these players.  That's why Rodan and Fiora must play in the seniors in order to increase their mkt value.

The form displayed by Chaffey this year is nothing short of horrendous, his disposal has been attrocious as his clangger count is testimony, I dont think we can fool anyone with this has been, second round draft pick in our dreams perhaps!

You would have to think that there would a lot to go before Chaffey, but having said that there wouldn't be to many of those before Chaffey that would be tradable for anything decent. Possible trade but I think we will keep him.

Couldn’t agree more HH.  On what he has shown to date, I don’t think he’s the sort of player that can take us much further than where we are now.

Maybe others would be ahead of him to let go at the end of this year, but if it’s not this season then he would most likely be in this category for 2005, unless things greatly improve for him between now and then.

Exactly HH - I think we have held onto some of these middle range blokes under the belief that if we recruited a couple of "gun" players it would be enough to get us to the 8.

Clearly that has proven to be the wrong way to go.

So now we have to look a trading those who may offer value to someone else so we can get some good draft picks and re-build this Club.

Not a fan.
Clanger king, doesn't move the ball fast enough, poor vision, poor disposal and gets goals kicked on him regularly.
Trade if possible.

Well, I've always liked Chaff, especially since he came on a couple of years ago.
He's had a shocker of a year, but who hasn't
I would keep him, because players who have been okay in the past may just come good again under a new coaching regime.
I would not like to see him fire at another club
