Slow starts
« on: March 12, 2007, 04:55:24 AM »
It's only preseason but what's with the slow starts so far this year?

By quarter time we've been 3 or more goals down in every game  :P.

Here's last season's 1st quarters - In 16 games we were outscored.  With the teams around our capabilities we got back on a lot of occasions, but the better teams just blew us out of the water.

 R3 – RFC 4.2 v W/C 3.3 – Lose by 46
 R4 – RFC 1.4 v Bris 1.6 – Win by 14
 R5 – RFC 2.3 v Carl 5.4 – Win by 8
 R6 – RFC 4.3 v Ess 5.2 – Win by 2
 R7 – RFC 4.2 v Swans 8.00 – Lose by 118
 R8 – RFC 3.0 v Crows 2.4 – Win by 3
 R9 – RFC 4.3 v Cats – 5.3 – Win by 20
R10 – RFC 2.4 v Freo 3.4 – Lose by 11
R11 – RFC 3.2 v Kangas 3.6 – Win by 35
R12 – RFC 1.4 v Hawks 2.3 – Lose by 41
R13 – RFC 4.5 v Pies 0.2 – Win by 47
R14 – RFC 5.3 v Port 4.3 – Win by 38
R15 – RFC 1.2 v Melb 1.4 – Lose by 18
R16 – RFC 2.0 v Swans 4.3 – Lose by 48
R17 – RFC 2.2 v Saints 5.5 – Lose by 103
R18 – RFC 0.6 v Dogs 5.2 – Lose by 22
R19 – RFC 7.4 v Bris 1.1 – Win by 82
R20 – RFC 4.3 v Carl 5.2 – Win by 45

Understand what you are saying X but I'd rather be in some sort of form going into the season proper.

And to say the games mean sweet "fa" - well I disagree when you look at it from the point of view that there are number of players (call them fringe players) who should be out there busting their gut to play well so they can make the round 1 team. Some of them on Saturday were as flat as pancakes.

We cannot afford to give away 4-5 goal starts and play catch up. It may work against bottom sides but against the big boys we'll get pummelled as the delightful stats Moi posted  :chuck clearly show :o

That's a pretty damning stat there Moi, coupled with our slow starts in the practice games this season.

These boys need a cup of coffee and a kick up the ar$e before they go out to play.
Not a good pattern and really makes you question the intensity of some of our guys as well as Wallace's pre match addresses!!!

Most of our players are slow, so it goes hand in hand.

Slow in the head, slow on their feet, slow to react.

over the past few urs, what form have the eagles and esp the swans shown going into a season???
i remember even when the bimbers and carlton were top sides, they were all shocking in pre season, used to be the only time we beat them

the season starts rnd 5, our start last yr didnt kill us, losing to the hawks,  and dockers is what killed us and games we should have won post rnd 5

That's a valid point, but I want to see some kind of form from the guys.

I doubt that they are out there 'pretending' to have bad skills and injuries.

Everything I have read so far from this pre-season has been the same problem we've had for years. Bad skills, bad decision making and slow starts.

In Canberra our slow start was due to Goodes, Bolton and O'loughlin going BAM from the first bounce and our young guys
were like...WTF???  I believe inexperience could be used as an excuse in this case as it took them till half time to work out how to stop them. Us winning the second half proved to me that they did learn from the initial baptism of fire but in the season proper we can't afford to give any team breathing space so early on.

That's true as the top sides make their run in the second half of the year but we don't want to be 1-4 or 0-5 at round 5.

I agree that the pre-season games mean nothing but when you look at last years stats as well, it's the pattern of slow starts that's disconcerting.

Our starts have been slow at least since the Gieschen era nothing has changed whatsoever. I can only recall two games we had the game virtually won at quarter time since about 95. They were the North game on the Monday night where we lead 9 2 56 to 3 0 18 after kicking the first 6 in the first 6 mins going on to win by 49 points and in rd 7 2005 when we lead Carlton 7 4 46 to 0 2 2 going on to win by 85 points.

It's because we haven't had a midfielder or two that can consistently blow the game apart off their own boot.
Tuck took the game by the throat against Carlton in 1995 and the result speaks for itself.
Tivendale has the pace and the kicking ability but something seems to be missing up top.

there have been more, not many more but more, how about freo at the G, we had them blown away early also when they played like a circus act of ring a ring a rosy
