Kane recovers after clanger
04 April 2007   Herald-Sun
Daryl Timms

RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace is confident captain Kane Johnson will bounce back from his embarrassing Round 1 clanger against Carlton.

Johnson kicked the ball 50m the wrong way when he gathered the first possession of the match and Wallace said the error rattled the skipper for the rest of the game.

His opponent, Nick Stevens, had 27 possession in a best-on-ground performance to steer the Blues to a 17-point victory.

Wallace had no doubt the mistake bothered Johnson for the rest of the game.

"He made a mistake and there were a lot of mistakes made, but that one was a 'you beauty' and I think, honestly, it probably impacted on his whole game," Wallace said.

"If it's Round 11 and you make that sort of clanger you probably wash if off a little bit.

"When that sort of thing happens it's almost like being a rabbit in a spotlight, you do something like that and you are embarrassed and you go through your whole mind thinking about it.

"You are getting ribbed by the opposition . . . then he had a major job on Nick Stevens and Nick got hold of the ball three or four times in the early part of the game and I just think that he (Johnson) lost his way a little bit."

Wallace said it was the only time he'd seen Johnson rattled in a game.

He said he expected Johnson to perform much better against the Swans at the MCG on Saturday.

Wallace also expressed his concerns about the unavailability of AFL-standard grounds to train and play on during the pre-season.

He said the Tigers had used sub-standard grounds in the lead-up to the season.

Wallace said the Tigers had done a lot of their training at Victoria Park during the summer but it wasn't up to standard and was rock hard.

"A lot of guys are finding stress problems and injuries because of inferior grounds," he said. "There needs to be some time and energy spent making sure we get it right."

proof that he should stand down as captain asap!

he is not physically or mentally strong, is not a leader, he may be a good organizer, but no leader.

its clear to see that richo is the one that all players look up to and respect.

i wanna watch Foley in during this season, he seems to be the only one who has the guts to kill himself to win a clearance, if he can improve on his skill level and keep up his work rate , i reckon he maybe should be given the vc role and make richo the captain

if richo buggers up occasionally who cares, but i reckon if he was made captain he would lift a gear

You've got to ask again why say this publicly even if it's true. Why not just say "He had a bad game, he knows it, he's keen as captain to make amends this week". I don't think Sugar is the only one who is rattled. A poor effort in the media by the RFC in the past 10 days or so. Very undisciplined. The Club needs to pull itself back into line quickly and focus on Saturday's game. Geez we need a win  :pray.

You're probably right X as to what Terry was thinking but for Plough to say Sugar got rattled essentially so easily will mean all 15 other clubs will now focus heavily on testing his metal. A big test for Sugar in the next month or so to see if he can handle the extra public scrutiny that will come now. Wallace could have put the acid on inhouse.

Because he's being honest and for doing what kane did,he SHOULD be publicly berated  - THEN SACKED???

Johson is a joke and this incident is proof of how soft he is.

Its not as though he's a figurehead for our club in any way either.
The guy can't socialise on any level abd is a stuffen bogan sihtman.

Him and Bowden are such losers

You still don't berate your players publicly because as coach you're just as responsible as the players are if not more so are you make the tactical and team selection decisions. You're in it together as a team. It's not as though Plough had a error free game. Moving Foley for example. When the Blues went one-on-one we had no answer from either the senior players nor tactically from the coaches box.
