IF YOU win more of the contested ball, you're odds-on to take the four points home as well.
Critics of the modern game forever talk about the explosion of uncontested possessions, but the hard-edged 50-50 contests have never been more important.
Of the 24 games played this season, 21 have been won by the team either breaking even or winning more of the contested ball.
All eight winners on the weekend won more of the contests.
So if the formula for success is that simple, how is anyone going to compete with West Coast?
Last year, the Eagles averaged 17 more contested disposals a match than their opposition -- a record.
In three games this year, the Eagles have taken it to a new level, winning 23 more contested possessions a match.
Since the start of 2005, the Eagles have played 54 games and lost the contested possession count just seven times.
