Forward scout: Richmond v Geelong

LESSONS FROM LAST WEEK

To be more competitive when we are in the game. I thought that when the game was in the balance, mid to late last quarter, the West Coast midfield took control of the game.

OUR BACKS

Geelong will want to have a tall forward line with Brad Ottens, Cameron Mooney, Tom Hawkins and Nathan Ablett. It is important we get our match ups right on those key players.

THEIR FORWARDS

The main danger is their ability to mark the ball when it comes inside the forward 50. They also have a couple of good small forwards in Gary Ablett and Paul Chapman.

MIDFIELD BATTLE

It will certainly be an aggressive game through the midfield. With the game being played indoors at the Telstra Dome it is going to be a bit quicker so it is important that when the ball does get outside the packs that we are on to them first. Then, once we win the ball, we must maintain possession and hurt them with those possessions.

THE RUCK DUEL

They have got Mark Blake, Brad Ottens and Steven King, so we are not quite sure at this stage which ruck combination they will be going with. From our point of view, they have a slight advantage only because all of their options are seasoned ruckmen.

OUR FORWARDS

Whenever the ball has been going into our forward line, we have been looking dangerous and as if we are going to score. However, I think it is up to the midfielders to get it in there more often as currently we haven’t been getting a lot of inside 50s.

THEIR BACKS

They have only got Tom Harley out of the backline at the moment, so they are certainly not weak in defence. Their backline is one of the keys to their game; they rely on getting a lot of counter attacks and run from there. So, it is important that if our forwards don’t win the football they put a lot of pressure on when they win it, and don’t give them opportunities to counter attack.

Match preview: Richmond v Geelong
richmondfc.com.au
Saturday, May 5, 2007

WHEN WE LAST MET: Round nine, 2006 - Richmond 17.8 (110) d Geelong 12.18 (90), Skilled Stadium.
It was Richmond’s first win at Skilled Stadium in 15 years and came after a week of criticism for the way in which they defeated Adelaide the week before. The Geelong side entered the game under pressure to perform and exited the game with a goalless last quarter. Chris Hyde and Kayne Pettifer kicked four and three goals respectively while Max Rooke was the leading goal kicker for the Cats. Troy Simmonds, Richard Tambling and Pettifer were best afield for the Tigers with Gary Ablett the most impressive player for Geelong.

STATS LEADERS:

Average disposals - Richmond: Nathan Foley (24), Joel Bowden (20), Shane Tuck (20). Geelong: Jimmy Bartel (29), Paul Chapman (29), Joel Corey (25).

Goals: Richmond: Matthew Richardson (11), Jay Schulz (9), Richard Tambling (7). Geelong: Cameron Mooney (12), Nathan Ablett (9), Cameron Ling (7).

Leading tackler: Richmond: Greg Tivendale (21). Geelong: Jimmy Bartel (25).

SUMMARY:

Richmond’s spirited loss to West Coast last weekend is likely to have boosted the confidence levels of the Tigers players. If they can take this confidence into Sunday’s game, they could well be singing their club song for the first time this season. Shutting down Paul Chapman and Jimmy Bartel will be vital to their chances of victory.

The Cats are on a two-game losing streak and are once again under pressure to match pre-season expectations. The club copped a hammering for its unexpected loss to the Kangaroos at home last weekend and will be eager to turn around its form on Sunday.

THE BIG QUESTION: Will Geelong be able to match Richmond’s speed?

I laughed at the line in the paper today about the Geelong way is expecting to win by 10 goals. I thought it was snatching defeat from the jaws of victory time and time again and whinging 40 years later about a GF they lost fair and square  :whistle lol.

JUDGMENT day will not arrive for under-siege Geelong this afternoon against Richmond at Telstra Dome.

A 10-goal victory is all but expected after a week of soul-searching at Skilled Stadium -- that has always been Geelong's way.
