Joel Bowden has been Richmond's most consistent player over the past 5 years.  There is no other backline player that obtains posession after posession and hits a target up the field.  This is shown by his efficieny rate being in the top 3 over the past 3 years.  He is the most unique full-back in AFL history and a true richmond champion.

Lets not forget Joel Bowden is a dual all-australian, dual B and F winner, won the AFL community award for helping under-privelged kids, and is the president of the AFL players association.  Not only is he richmond's most important player he is an all around great guy.

He has had his moments as a backman, doing some good jobs on key forwards, but on the whole, he has been getting a lot of easy kicks in the backline rather than being in the thick of it and creating play where we really, desperately need players - the midfield.

A talented player, but really, he left the midfield because he was too soft to man up and play there.

Not sure if McMahon covers Joel's spot as Jordie might struggle just a touch on Jonathan Brown lol but yep push Joel forward, even to full-forward and give the opposition something to think about with Richo, Browny, Petts and possibly Polak also up there.

you dont get all australian 2 years in a row without being a very very good player, fair enough he didnt have the greatest year in 07, but he was still in the top 5 in efficiency in the afl and lets not 4get he couldnt be as creative as he would have liked, as kellaway got the sack which meant a lot of the time bowden had to take the main 4ward, the man is a dead set star

Joel Bowden is a brilliant footballer and his record speaks for itself champion, would be great to see him get 30 touches in the all star game

The way to logically look at it is to look at the effect a player would have to the team as a whole if they were absent.

For mine, Bowden's absence would not have the same effect on the team as the exclusion of somone like Richo or even Simmo. Without Snake this year we have serverly struggled in the midfield and attempting to link up from HB to the F50.

Similiarly Richo (unfortunately IMHO) still remains the go to man in the forwardline. He is the spiritual leader of the team, leading by example and giving his all every single game.

Bowden has the accolades but he has played a very unaccountable game for years allowing him to rack up a huge amount of possessions. He hasn't the size, height or speed to play on the main backmen and always requires help if he is forced to do so. He is beautiful kick but if you were told that one of our stars had to prematurely retire immediately would his name spring to mind as the worst player to loose?

I would say, in terms of importance to our structure now and into the future, I would rank Rich and Simmo higher for the now and Lids, Foley, Thursty and even Cotchin for the future.

Just my opinion of course
