Chasing out of contract players

May be a good year to have the first pick in the PSD.....

Cashed-up clubs eye post-season trade
20 May 2007   Sunday Herald Sun
Jon Ralph

CASHED-up AFL clubs are preparing their hit lists for a post-season feeding frenzy, with their target a host of high-profile uncontracted stars.

The combination of an extra $500,00 in total player payments this year, the calibre of uncontracted players and the long list of potential retirees easing salary cap pressure makes it an ideal environment to attract rival stars.

Players out of contract at the end of the year include Chris Judd, Nick Dal Santo, Dale Thomas, Josh Fraser, Paul Hasleby, Matt Maguire, Luke McPharlin, Campbell Brown, Adam Cooney, Jamie Charman, Andrew Lovett, Des Headland, Warren Tredrea, Heath Shaw, Matthew Pavlich and Nick Riewoldt.

While every club needs to re-sign as many as 15 players each year, the circumstances this season may prove more difficult with potential suitors ready to pounce.

"I think you will find the clubs have the desire and interest to go shopping," one leading AFL official said.

"We are already hearing that from clubs and player managers that there is a strong amount of interest in the market."

Pavlich would be good.  Can play forward or in defence.

Yes he would have been good  :-\

Unless we can get one of these players cheap (via the PSD) then forget it. Trading for them for picks would be going for the mediocre quick fix again.

Should we chase, How much should we pay and the reason

Chris Judd, YES, $800,000 a season via the PSD only, hes simply a great player
Nick Dal Santo, YES, $ 450,000 a season via the PSD only, Good player and if he stays the Saints will pay to keep him.
Dale Thomas, YES, $400,000 a season via the PSD only, He wont leave but we should play mind games with him to just stuff up Collingwood
Josh Fraser, No
Paul Hasleby, No
Matt Maguire, YES, $500,000 a season via the PSD, We need another Key Position. We'll have to pay a premium to get him
Luke McPharlin, NO
Campbell Brown, NO
Adam Cooney, YES, $500,000 a season to make the Bullies pay more to keep him. Someone else may pop out the other side like a Giansiracusa etc.
Jamie Charman, NO
Andrew Lovett, NO
Des Headland, NO
Warren Tredrea, NO
Heath Shaw, YES, $ 450,000 via the PSD and see DALE THOMAS- lets stuff up Collingwoods Salary Cap
Matthew Pavlich YES, $ 700,000 via the PSD and lets make someone pay through the nose to keep him
Nick Riewoldt. YES, $ 700,000 via the PSD and lets make the saints cough up some players out the other end because of salary cap restraints.

As much as I can't see any changing clubs, nice summary Ramps. The only two I'd differ is Maguire (do we want another player coming back from a seriously badly broken leg and spend $500k per year on a defender again) and Riewoldt (his reliability in front of goal is on par with Richo).

to be honest i cant see us getting any of these but the least we can do is stuff up there future chances by making them pay through the nose to keep their players stuffing up there salary caps.

Saints fans are turning on Dal Santo btw.

Quote from: Statsman
I'll preface this by saying I used to be one of Dal Santo's biggest fans. His ability to find time and space in traffic and deliver the ball with poise and vision are just sublime.

However a disturbing trend has been emerging of late. Dal Santo is a front runner! When the game is there to be won, Dal Santo is nowhere to be seen. Yet, when the Saints are up and firing and dominating the game, Dal Santo is everywhere and displaying all those attributes that cause him to be rated so highly. You'll quite often see Dal Santo racking up possessions late in the game when its already been won. Sadly, you'll rarely see Dal Santo having an impact when the game is in the balance. When was the last time Dal Santo he played well when it mattered?

Agree with what statsman wrote, which is why Dal Santo wouldn't be a great fit for us at the moment. We're going to need guys that can perform when the going is tough for the next 2-3 years.

According to SEN, Dal Santo is having scans for potential foot stress fractures but they think he'll be okay and Riewoldt is also having scans for something but no one will say. It would be a good idea to avoid going after St Kilda players. The last thing we need is more players carrying long-term injuries.

Tidy analysis Ramps,

Would prefer the Tigers chase a yet-to-emerge Ruckman (Wood from Brisbane, Griffin from Adelaide) rather than any big name/ big $$$ players.

PSD for the current needs.  Draft for the future.

You've got to laugh at deluded bomber fans. Thinking we'd hand over Foley for poor Kepler Bradley or Bolton and Lids for their first pick + Bradley  :rollin
