At Coburg City Oval, the Tigers returned to the top four with a 41-point win over Port Melbourne. The match ebbed and flowed early, as Port missed several scoring opportunities through poor goalkicking before the Tigers opened up a four-goal break in the second half.

First-year Richmond recruit Jack Riewoldt continued to flourish at centre-half back. "He's really learning the position, and showing his versatility and potential as a footballer," Coburg coach Andy Collins said.

Kent Kingsley continued to push for senior selection, with a match-high four goals. "It just shows what a classy talent he is," Collins said. "Kent's been unfairly used as a scapegoat in the past, but he showed today that he's a class above VFL level."

The Coburg Tigers surged away from Port Melbourne to record a 41-point win at Coburg after a reasonably even first half.

Coburg's running players teamed well and worked well through the muddy centre area in the third term to set up the win.

The Tigers booted 4.1 to 0.5 in the the quarter and then five goals to two in the last.

"I was pleased, particularly after last week's really undisciplined performance," Coburg coach Andrew Collins said.

"We are really pleased to back it up with a more disciplined performance like that."

Collins said the forward line featuring Richmond's Cleve Hughes, Kent Kingsley (four goals) and Jay Schulz had looked dangerous throughout.

"Their backs weren't allowed to get on top and that's where there strengths have been," Collins said.

"We were really good but probably fortunate that (Port's David) Robbins didn't play.

"We shouldn't underestimate the value of probably the best midfielder in the comp, so that probably went our way.

"We have been able to settle down and the group was really committed today. All the 22 were very team-orientated."

It certainly is going to be big call on Gus at the end of the year.  Ideally you'd wish we were allowed to give him a further year on our rookie list but it's either promote him to the senior list or delist. 

Just to correct myself, I forgot they changed this rookie rule last year.  We can relist Gus as a rookie for a 3rd year. Problem solved.

Another change to the rookie system will allow clubs to relist a rookie player for three years as opposed to the present situation where a player must go back into the rookie draft after two years.

Match Report Vs. Port Melbourne

Coburg back to their best

The Burgers faced Port Melbourne at ABD Stadium on Sunday in what turned out to be another cold but fairly dry day. Coburg had six wins for the season while the Borough’s were just behind them on the ladder with five.

Due to the recent rain the centre square was more like a mud bath and caused for a very muddy slippery ball for most of the match and the skill level dropped a little accordingly.

Coburg got off to a solid but unproductive start in the first term kicking 3-5 to the Borough’s 2-1. Kent Kingsley was a key target up forward and finished well kicking four goals for the match.
Brent Hartigan also played a key role up forward and threw his body around taking lots of sliding marks, finishing with a couple of goals.

Andrew Horne provided great run through the backline and midfield during the second quarter and was again named as one of Coburg’s best players. In the past five weeks playing in defence Horne has been named in the best Coburg players on four occasions.
Kelvin Moore also stood tall in the second term, twice running back into a pack and getting a crucial fist to the ball. Moore’s run of the backline for the entire match provided the Coburg forwards with multiple goaling opportunities.

Jack Riewoldt lined up for the third week in a row at Centre Half Back, and again was fantastic in the defensive role. He did a great job in beating his man and also ran off to collect many possessions.
The scoreboard showed the Burgers up by 8 points at the main break, but neither side had been overly convincing. The match was still well and truly up for the taking in the second half.

Whilst the Sponsors, Board Members and Golden Tigers were tucking into their presidents’ lunch at half time, Coburg President Lill Priest announced that the ABD Group Stadium naming rights had been secured and the official name of the City Oval is now ‘ABD Group Stadium’.

Jonathan Mullins was excellent in the third term. He kicked the first goal of the quarter from 25m out, after a great chase and tackle resulted in a free kick. Late in the quarter he kicked another from the same spot after courageously throwing his body into a pack. Jono wasn’t shy of a celebration either.

Port had much of the play during the third quarter, but due to great Burger pressure and costly mistakes they could only mange six straight behinds for the quarter, while a much more accurate Coburg added 4-1 to take a handy 28 point lead into the last break.

The Borough kicked the first goal of the final quarter, but Paul Shelton snapped one for Coburg that put the Burgers back to five goals up, and they were not going to give that lead away. Again Port’s goal kicking for the quarter was atrocious; they managed an inaccurate 2-12 in the second half compared to Coburg’s 9-3.

Glen Carrick made his debut for the Coburg seniors and played a solid game down back that impressed coach Al Collins. After many impressive games in the reserves Carrick will now look to hold his spot in the senior side.
Paul Shelton and Al Neville racked up their usual amount of touches for the Burgers and were brilliant in winning the ball out of the middle. Captain Travis Ronaldson was again excellent in the ruck.

The Burgers still sit in 4th position on the ladder with a 7 win-4 loss record. They face the Northern Bullants at Preston City Oval next Saturday with the game will be televised on the ABC beginning at 1:10pm.

Reserves
The Coburg reserves faced an undefeated Port Melbourne side and after a brilliant second quarter were 26 points up at the main break. Great backline pressure forced Port to be very inaccurate and they managed to kick an ugly 4-8 in the third term.
Coach Adam Potter knew at ¾ time that if the Burgers played as well as they did in the 2nd quarter they would get the crucial win. To the boys credit they kicked three goals and held Port to only two, to take out a twelve point victory.

Nick Lynch was the most prominent forward on the ground with 4 goals, while Jason Morgan continued his excellent from with a best on ground performance.
