Richmond seeks AFL help for internal review

Richmond has resisted the temptation thus far to apply for financial support from the AFL, but it has turned to the league for assistance with a comprehensive financial and commercial analysis of the club.

The Tigers, staring at a loss of at least $2 million this year, have brought the expertise of AFL strategic planner Andrew Catterell to a review being completed by consultants Crowe Lovett. The process, which began several weeks ago, is expected to take up to three months to complete.

Catterell has joined Ben Crowe and former Fremantle captain Peter Mann on the review team, which met yesterday Richmond business development manager Anthony Moore.

Crowe and his firm have completed similar reviews and produced strategic plans for Fremantle, Melbourne and St Kilda and also done work for Essendon and the AFL.

"It is pretty much a top-to-bottom exercise," Crowe said.

It is understood that the Tigers agreed to commission an independent analysis of the club at their board meeting last month as part of an attempt to establish a path back to profitability.

The club out-sourced much of its marketing late last year and effectively sacked its recruiting network in order to cut costs and reshape the organisation of the club, but on the back of another poor season on-field, an equally poor season off-field has followed.
