So to sum up we are finding experimental ways to tank.

Riewoldt was blanketed by Thursfield last time they met, yet Raines had him for the whole game???? :lol
Wallace just ain't that stupid.

LOL Magic  ;D

Picks 1 2 18 34 next year would finish the job.
Guess who wants that young WA kid Naitanui next year  ;).

Is tanking really the answer?  Doesn't seem to have done any good for Carlton.
Draft and monetary penalities (which they deserved) really stuffed them right up. With no early picks they were forced to top up with heaps of recycled duds and resort to AFL handouts to keep afloat which kept them down in mediocreland. It's only been the last 2 drafts that they've been able to introduce talented kids like Murphy, Kennedy and Gibbs. As we know youngsters will take time to develop and they need the support of senior bodies around them. They had that early in the season with their best 22 on the park and being ahead of other clubs in their preparation. With Stevens gone for the year, Thorton being out and their other senior players struggling, the marathon of an AFL season has finally taken its toll.

Wallace on Raines vs Riewoldt match-up
« Reply #19 on: July 04, 2007, 04:46:28 AM »
From RFC and Sportal:

The Richmond coach said his decision to play young running defender Andrew Raines on St Kilda's match-winning centre half-forward Nick Riewoldt at the weekend was not a sign of what some commentators suggest is a lack of tall defensive options.

Wallace said the move was more to do with finding a match-up capable of keeping pace with Riewoldt's extraordinary running ability.

"Graham (Polak) can play those roles as well and has played them. We played Port Adelaide a few weeks ago and he played on Tredrea, so he can take those sorts of roles.

"We just thought that the way Nick plays the game and with his ability to get up high on the lead that it might have taken Graham out of the picture a little bit, so that's why we went with Andrew for the match-up on this occasion."

"He (Raines) only got beaten once in a one out clash where Nick took the mark, turned around and ended up kicking the goal so from that point of view his four goals weren't from being outsized, I thought he did a very good job."

"Nick (Riewoldt) still was a good player for them which he is week in and week out but certainly we've said we've had a little bit of deficiency in that (defensive) area (and) that's why we went and got Graham Polak last year."

Raines agreed that the height discrepancy – Riewoldt stands at 193 centimetres and Raines 184 – was difficult to counter but he still enjoyed tackling the tall order.

"Any task is pretty tough at AFL level but it was a great experience playing the best forward in the league and I was pretty much playing centre-half back," Raines said.

"(Riewoldt is) a lot taller than me and very good but I enjoyed the task and even though he kicked a couple of goals on me I thought that early on I only kept him to one before half-time, I thought (I) might be a chance keeping to that but (he is a) terrific player and (it was) a great experience playing against him."

riewoldt was not the match winner, what a crock

g train kicked 5 and i wouldnt even say he was

what won the game for the aints

1/ crucial clearances late in teh 3rd quarter and in the first half of the last quarter

2/ flukey goals kicked by riewoldt( 2 flukes, 1 bs free), flukey goal kicked by gilbert

3/ our inability to be 4-5 goals up at half time , cos thats how much better than them we were and just kept on missing goals

Yeah I would have had Harvey and Montagna as the match winners, not Riewoldt and the ugly man.

I think terrys just fast tracking our juniors. Leaving Howat on Harvey is one example. Howat will have gained a hell of a lot out of that meeting. Its obvious that Howat (although maligned by some including me) is in his long term plans. Howat does run all day, thats his strength but i'd love to see him improve his body strength and become a more damaging player rather than alot of his soft disposals out on a wing. He really needs to sometimes go for the damaging disposals not just the easiest one, which i think he takes alot.

Thursfield is another who is getting the big jobs every week in order to "fast track" him. He copes quite admirably IMO.

Howat, Edwards are Foley are the beginings of a our future midfield types. They run and run and run and run. When we get these types up and atom in a few years time we will be a very fast side.

I think the team gameplan is slowly cranking into gear. You can tell that the boys are starting to get used to terry's run and carry gameplan and im getting very excited about our future. Foley says “We are all confident about where we are heading and we can see the direction we’re going.” thats basically it.

patience brothers and sisters, patience ;)

Open space allows Cam time to always use his preferred side without being caught or forced back and sideways to wheel around. As they say the other leg is just for standing on.

Agree blx the young blokes are now being fast tracked for 2008 and beyond.

Agree Julz - the ugly one was well held for all but 10 minutes. Reiwoldt...hmm... I am not allowed to comment on Nick  ;D

thought Montagna was the difference - that match up didn't work at all.
