Coburg vs Northern Bullants (ABC TV game)

What was most pleasing for me was 2 guys who are known for a lack of intensity and work-rate putting in a really good effort today. Meyer and Schulz worked really hard on a day when it'd be easy to sit back and blame the conditions for not doing much. Both tackled, chased, lots of little things that helped the team win. Meyer's effort in the second half on a red-hot Iacabucci was excellent.

Well said jezza. Took the words right out of mouth about Sarge and Danny. Perhaps they've been told what situation they are in and if they didn't lift their intensity then bye-bye. Playing Danny on-ball as a tagger was a smart move by Andy Collins. It took him to the ball.

Connors was brilliant after half-time. He has talent to burn. The one flaw is his drop in discipline at times. It's probably cost him game(s) after getting reported for elbowing apparently. Not only may it cost him VFL games but also put back any chance of an AFL debut this year.

Harts is definitely pushing for a Richmond game. Best RFC player over 4 quarters although all did well IMO. Graham did some nice things and Cleve took some telling marks in defence towards the end.

Well done to Tas on his Coburg debut. His hands and disposal looked clean in the wet conditions. He'd know he'll have to get into the gym and protein products over summer as he got pushed on the ball against bigger bodied opponents.

Good game all up. Contest after contest and players of both sides throwing their bodies in. Coburg just had the more class which is good to see. OER got mentioned a number of times during 3XX's commentary  .

connors hit was a bit crude, looking at 2 weeks I reckon. I thought that that was really only his moment of madness. Rawlings on the commentary summed it up well. He could have gone off his nut after the 1st qtr but instead put it aside and really knuckled down and played terrific footy. Hopefully after his probably suspension he comes in and picks up where he left off. That 3rd qtr had me reminiscing of Lids 3rd qtr at the G.

Clingan looks a likely prospect. Obviously skinny and got easily brushed aside in one contest. but he looks to have clean hands, clean disposal and he works hard. Loved that tackle in the 2nd qtr IIRC when he save a goal

mguane deserves a mention, played v men twice his size and did real well

also gus, must say, i was surprised he didnt play on the field longer, he showed real real real good skills out there today and he may just make it!

meyer worked hard as a tagger today , even with a dicky knee which was good to see

and jay picked up his work rate along with cleve, good signs

I actually think Gus can make it, he looks quite capable. Really come on since the last time I saw him play.

Connors disposal and decision making after half-time was fantastic.

McGuane was good, I liked Clingans game.

Meyer also did well when he was on Iacobucci and working through the middle.

Agree X especially for a 200 cm bloke in the wet.

Gus, Moore and Cleve are emergencies for tomorrow. Maybe we were saving Gus just in case someone for whatever reason has to pull out late.

Tough Tigers hold off Bullants

THE Coburg Tigers staved off a gallant Northern Bullants side by 12 points at Preston City Oval yesterday, getting up 10.14 (74) to 8.14 (62) on a bitterly cold and rainy afternoon.

Despite going into the game as underdogs, the Bullants fired the first shot and when Mark Austin kicked the first of his three goals, the Tigers had some catching up to do.

With a patient forward structure and seemingly endless space, the Bullants looked the better side in the opening term and had a two-goal advantage at the first break.

David Teague and Josh Houlihan led the way with 10 possessions each.

The second quarter was sloppy as expected as the ball gathered mud, but Coburg came to life and began to run numbers behind the ball. The forward pair of Kent Kingsley and Jay Schulz were clearly hampered by the conditions.

"It was always going to be tough for those two. The conditions didn't suit them at all," Tigers coach Andy Collins said. Inaccuracy also cost Kingsley, who should have kicked at least four goals but ended with two.

At half-time, the Bullants clung to a nine-point lead, with brothers Jordan and Jarrod Bannister having worked consistently to gather 31 disposals between them. Alister Neville had chalked up 15 for the Tigers.

The intensity lifted in the third quarter when the teams went goal for goal.

When Schulz snapped a clever goal midway through the term, the Tigers supporters began to smell a victory and their team responded.

"It's a real credit to the group to win in those conditions," said Collins. "I rate this win very highly against our home-town nemesis."

Discussing the AFL prospects of best-on-ground Neville, Collins said: "I think it's just a question of which club takes him."

Coburg moves to eight wins and fourth place on the ladder, but will play three of the top four teams in the coming weeks. For the losers, their seventh loss for the season and ninth spot makes a finals appearance unlikely.

I got to see the 2nd half of the reserves.

Peterson: silky skills this bloke but clear needs more matches. Up to good 2nd efforts but I would say doesn't have the miles in the legs for the 3rd efforts just yet - but is getting there. Took a couple of beautiful overheads marks - as a I said silky skills.

Casserley: speaking of silky skills. This kid has 'em all! He has to be the best kick on the RFc list IMHO - didn't not miss a target in the 2 quarters I saw. Also good for him to get through another game in really heavy conditions

Paddy Bowden: first game back in I think it is 5-6 weeks. ran really well. played CHB but kept running forward and presenting as a forward option - snagged a couple of goals and points. Again good to see him get through a game in those consitions - the centre was a bog!

I am really happy to see Schulz getting the kudos - he deserves them. His 1%ers yesterday were first rate and the work he did off the ball was very good, like it was last week. Hartigan too was very good. Was disppointed a coupld of times with Connors decision making - but overall a vast improvement on his last senior Coburg appearance up at Ballarat

I actually thought the best on ground was Shelton - I thought his hard work in contested contests was sensational.
