We're not tanking - March
« on: July 09, 2007, 04:44:27 AM »
From the Age
Michael Gleeson | July 9, 2007

Richmond president Gary March angrily condemned a suggestion during the week that the club was "tanking" to ensure quality picks in this year's draft.

"I don't know if our guys have ever had a better crack than we had (last week) we were beaten by a better side on the day in St Kilda, so how it could be said that this side was tanking over the last couple of weeks (beggars belief)," March said in his pre-match president's address.

"When I look at the way some of our senior players have put their hand up this year … the way they have gone about their football has been a credit to them.

"Our captain, Kane Johnson, has played most of the year with a broken hand, he could have easily missed six to eight rounds but he has continued to play and try to set ourselves up for the second-half of the year.

"Matthew Richardson played and basically didn't miss a game with a fractured eye socket, he put his hand up to play to show leadership to the younger guys.

"A couple of weeks ago we had Chris Newman puncture a lung over in Fremantle. He jumped on a plane nearly against medical advice and played the next week.

"We continually have senior guys putting their hand up and wanting to show some leadership for the younger blokes."

March said these were not the actions of players or a club that was prepared to lie down. He insisted the club would put its strongest team on the field every week and that a win was more important than a possible extra pick at the end of the first round of the national draft.

tanking, we sure are, playing defenders who just keep stuffing up like raines and newman means we are tanking

joel had a bad game but he has been pretty good all yr, but newman has no respect for his opponent and raines thinks he has his dads class and skill, but all he has is his name

agree Terry Wallace always got on the back of Bowden before he came to the club as a commentator
he said Bowden's style of playing cost the tigers when his man gets the ball & creates or goals himself
Why did Terry Wallace not stop Bowden yesterday from breaking team rules ( benched 1 time ) to tell him everything was going to plan looking good

The players aren't tanking they have got careers at stake.

But there is more than one way to tank a game.

come-on watch the replay & see the half running players it stands out a mile & a half
the match-ups from the start of the game which they cost us Wallace never made the right moves & most of all when the game is in the balance
poo if l can pick it up off a TV his coaching staff & him are idiots

the way we ran so slow yesterday, seemed like everyone was in jog mode suggests we did tank

no one ran hard like we have the past 6 weeks, only richo did

the big turning point was when lids when off, he was starting to have a real impact on the game.

once he went off it was game over and watching sugar newman and tiv etc just jogging out there and putting no pressure on says to me we are tanking

if we were not tanking surely these players would be dragged dropped and sent to kindom come

How r we supposed to respect March when he spins sh it like this

You can't win with that one Brackets.
You get the coaching staff and management claiming he's playing under duress as he has had or got a broken hand and if he was not in the side due to the broken hand well that would be the line they would be using. Enough is enough in terms of excuses from everybody at the club. Alot of fans are beginning to grow wearisome of the garbage spins we have been receiving.

I think we're at about 50% on the tank scale at the moment. We're tanking through match-ups and a little through forcing Gaspar out and Polo into surgery. But we're still playing guys like Johnson with a broken hand and Simmonds who is very unfit. When we start dropping those guys for players like Graham, then we'll be in full-on tank mode. Could happen this week too, next 6 games are going to be very tough.

Not sure why people think the fact we were lazy means we are tanking...
Its par for the course with us..

As for the short backline , maybe.. Though look at bulldogs backline during his time there..
Playing raines on riewoldt is no stranger than playing rohan smith on robran in a prelim final..

Coincidence is both are ideas that went pear shaped masterminded by the "thorough and methodical" coaching genius that is TW. It is almost as if Terry is happy to take you up to a point to keep the fire flickering in regards to he still got an aim/ objective to reach as he did with the Dogs in 97/98. It is almost as if Terry is happier finishing closr to a grand final rather than winning one as others will get plaudits as well. Just missing ensures that Terry will get plaudits and talk such as "Terry Wallace did a great job with so and so taking them from where they were to just falling at the last hurdle". As his nemesis Malcolm Blight said post 98 GF
to win one is great
to go back to back is impossible
to win 3 you can't be pulling the strings in this competition.

The way he walked out on the Dogs is evidence of this. Served his purpose blamed the club and moved on to the media where he had a forum all to himself to give his version of events and then when the time was right moved on to the next club after his shameless self promotion on Fox Footy in 2004 and the glut of media frenzy he lapped up whilst going through the process of being interviewed as well as his comments once he got the job.

The players don't tank as they've got a AFL career to preserve and save. Yep we were simply lazy and undisciplined yesterday. Match-ups are a different matter. Normally coaches changed match-ups that aren't working during a game; not persist and tolerate them for the whole four quarters as a learning process.
