Sweeping out the older players?
« on: July 24, 2007, 02:58:29 AM »
In the Age today, Walls suggests Carlton should get rid of all their older players at the end of the year like Fev, Whitnall, Lappin and Kouta.

http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/blues-need-a-new-broom-to-sweep-clean-and-an-axe-for-three-veterans/2007/07/23/1185043038562.html

There's a couple of regulars on OER who say we should do the same thing with our older players. Blight did a similar thing when he took over as coach of the Crows with a more experienced list. He delisted the captain McDermott, vice-captain McGuiness and fan favourite Andrew Jarman to make a point of a new era beginning.

With no or little middle age-bracket tier the payoff would be we'd have to throw the kids to the wolves if we did this.

Peoples' thoughts - Yeah or Neah?

Wait until end of next season at least - then chop chop.

We could do that, but then when the kids aren't winning the next year Wallace will be blamed for getting rid of them.
And if we keep them it will be Wallace's fault as well lol
And then when these lazy bastards get picked up by another club and they decide to pull their finger out and play well it will be Wallace's fault, not the lazy has been's.

Quite realisticaly, what have the senior players added this year that you wouldn't say see ya later?
Nothing!

They won't get rid of all of them, for the above reasons, but hopefully will see the end of some, starting with the captain.

If you mean Gaspar, Hall, Kingsley and Knobel...then I'd say "yes". We're short enough on experience as it is, don't make it any worse.

Wouldn't be judging players on age so much as ability to play the game consistently at the highest level.

Yup, sweep those suckers out.

The culture must start from scratch instead of the example our older players set that possessions are the only thing you need, not accountability.

We also need arrogance.  Something that Connors, Jack and Edwards(game style, not mouth) all clearly represent.  They show hope.  :bow

Why does everyone want to get rid of Ray Hall? Do people think tall defenders grow on trees?

Who are we going to replace him with, Jason Cloke????
Experience is a good school. But the fees are high.

Good point although he is already been shown the door.
People have short memories. He actually played all right 2 years back.
And he has a bit of grunt in him beleive it or not.
Funny you say that Dallascrane, people love to bag players, was watching some all tapes from 2001 and everyone bagged Sziller. Can tell you if you know your footy, Sziller was one of the main reasons we got where we did that year. Sziller work at stoppages was fantastic.

As for Ray Hall, Ray did his job well when fit.

Ray was a guest speaker at the club on Sunday.
If he's been shown the door and hasn't been around the club, Jack, why was he there?
