ROUND 17 MATCH REPORT: COBURG V GEELONG
Coburgs winning streak of five came to a halt on Saturday as they faced a strong Geelong outfit. After a tight first quarter Geelong ran away with the game in the second term and held a comfortable five goal lead for most of the second half. The match was played as a curtain raiser to Geelong v Richmond at Skilled Stadium.
In what was a hard scrappy first quarter both teams only managed to kick one goal each; with the scores deadlocked on a ‘whopping’ eight points each at the first break. Both sides disposal through the midfield and to their forwards was ordinary to say the least. Jarrod Silvester held the backline together well with good help from Kelvin Moore and Andrew Horne.
The game opened up in the second quarter which was unfortunate for Coburg, as they only managed two goals, while Geelong piled on seven to take a healthy lead at halftime.
The Tigers lost one of their main focal points up forward in Kent Kingsley, who was forced off the ground in the second term with a thigh injury forcing Coburg to alter its game plan. However things didn’t go Coburgs way and a 32 point deficit was the result at the main break.
Ryan Gamble was the key to Geelongs breakaway; he finished with four goals and was best on ground.
By no means were Coburg blown away in the third or fourth quarters, but they couldn’t bridge the gap to get within striking distance of the Geelong side. The cats played smart footy, and basically wouldn’t let the Burgers get a run on.
With Angus Graham elevated to Richmond, Adam Pattison took over the ruck duties and gave the Coburg midfielders first use of the ball. Andrew Krakouer and Paul Shelton read Pattison well and collected many possessions through the midfield.
To Coburg’s credit they battled it out till the final siren. After the main break the Burgers stayed equal with the Cats loosing the half by only five points. With percentage likely to play an important part in the lead up to the finals, it was a positive to take out of a disappointing game.
Coburg currently sit in third position on the ladder with 114 as their %. They are equal on points with Geelong who are second; and one game clear of North Ballarat in fourth position.
Mitch Farmer made his debut for the Burgers, after being elevated from the Calder Cannons TAC Cup U18 side, and involved himself well as the game went on.
James Polkinghorne did the same the week before; in a move to give both players the experience of playing at VFL level.
With finals just around the corner for both sides no more current day Cannon players will be selected for Coburg.
The Burgers have a bye next week, before flying back over to Aurora Stadium to take on Tasmania in the second last round before finals.

ReservesThe reserves kicked another cricket score on the weekend, thrashing the Bendigo Bombers by 164 points.
After an inaccurate first term the Burgers kicked 29 goals in the next three quarters, to the Bombers measly 6.
Fort Caruso was instrumental for the Burgers, collecting 40 touches and also slotting three goals in a best on ground performance. Ramez Dagher was the leading goal kicker with 7, while Nat Caruso added another 4.
