TR Mate who are some players to watch at the Burgers?

NC My apprentice Andrew Horne is coming along nicely and everyone should keep a lookout for the big cat Jarred Sylvester running around Telstra Dome next year.

Nick Carnell seems pretty confident about Sylvester being picked up.  :shh

But "telstra dome," not at Tiges MCG.

Am I reading too much into it?  :scream

I'm sure he just got mixed up with the Tiges home ground.   ;)

Wasn't there talk that the Bombers were interested in him too?

There should be a rule that the AFL club connected to their affiliate gets first crack at their players.

They all probably would like to take him as a rookie but given this draft lacks depth IMO we'd have to use a National draft pick if we want him. I guess the only advantage we have is our pick in each round is before the other 3 clubs interested but that's no guarantee either.

4 clubs eh WP? Richmond, Essendon, Melbourne? (need a full back), Carlton? (need KPPs)

Affiliate players should come under a father-son type rule IMO

Depends on the club I reckon.

I would have thought orginally Rookie draft (as mature age one) but now I think some may look at him as a late pick in the National Draft for the reason MT mentioned. 22yo KPP with great skills and a footy brain

I wonder if there's value in the AFL introducing a preference system for drafting from affiliated VFL teams to encourage the VFL to retain good prospects and strengthen the links between AFL and VFL clubs. Perhaps some sort of bidding system similar to the father son rule. Probably won't happen though.

I love the way Coburg has become a home for the best youngsters that didn't get drafted and I love the way Richmond are prepared to reward those players with spots on the list. I'd hate to see us doing all this ground work only to lose good players to other sides.

Agree jezza and Mopsy about some sort of preference system. People forget Coburg FC almost became extinct before we came along.

We've also now got Calder Cannons affiliated with us and Coburg too so getting the best youngsters that aren't drafted should continue.

I think that at least 4 players who played for Vic Metro in last year's u/18 c'ships, and who didn't get drafted, are now playing for Coburg:
Horne
Anderson
Riddle
Vasilevski

It's also worth noting that Sylvester was in line to get rookie'd by us 2 years ago, training with us right up to the rookie draft day. They picked Humm instead.

I reckon this is a great idea jezza - but as you said I cannot see it happening. A question that always comes up is what happens to those stand alone teams?

But I think if it was a 4th round pick you had to give up then that owuld be pretty fair

Just keep the rules the same as now for stand alone teams. Free for anyone to draft or rookie list.
