Tigers down by 31 points
10:23 PM Sat 18 August, 2007
By Matt Brown,
richmondfc.com.au

A SPIRITED Richmond has fought hard but fallen short against the Eagles, going down by 31 points at Subiaco Oval on Saturday night.

The Tigers took up the fight to the reigning premiers but the quality and experience of the West Coast line-up saw them home, 18.9 (117) to Richmond 12.14 (86).

The Eagles lost Brownlow medalists Chris Judd and Ben Cousins before the game giving the Tigers some hope of matching the reigning premier’s dominant midfield.

The Tigers looked lively early and, but for some skill errors when moving the ball out of defence, could have punished the Eagles early in the game.

With Nathan Foley effectively blanketed by Tyson Stenglein, the Richmond midfield worked hard but struggled as Daniel Kerr began to exert his influence.

The lead changed several times in the opening quarter as Matthew Richardson and Nathan Brown worked overtime in the Tigers forward line to keep their hopes alive.

A sensational solo effort by Richardson taking the ball out of a ruck contest before snapping a goal was the highlight of the opening term.

Goals to Brett Deledio and Adam Pattison saw the Tigers stay within eight points of the Eagles at the first break.

When Nathan Brown sharked a goal within 30 seconds of the start of the second quarter the Tigers’ hopes were looking up.

But the goal stung the West Coast into action as Kerr again took control in the centre and the home side piled on five unanswered goals in just 10 minutes.

The Tigers dug deep to shut down the Eagles run and goals to Richardson and Brown saw them go to the long break trailing by a more respectable 20 points.

The big task at half-time for the Tigers’ coaching team was to find a way to quell the influence of Kerr, who had 20 first-half possessions. Daniel Jackson was thrown the unenviable challenge.

The Eagles threatened to blow away the Tigers in the third quarter with three early goals increasing their lead to 31 points. But against the odds, the Tigers worked their way back with consecutive goals to Brown and Jack Riewoldt.

A superb running goal to Richard Tambling then narrowed the margin to just nine points, stunning the home crowd into silence.

Quinten Lynch then kicked his fifth goal of the game to see the Eagles take a 15-point advantage to the final break.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the final term through Le Cras before Deledio’s second goal gave the Tigers renewed hope.

Richardson marked twice within the forward 50 but let the Eagles off the hook with consecutive behinds before goals to Hunter, Staker and Lynch (who finished with seven) steadied the home side.

The Tigers continued to apply pressure but the Eagles defence stood firm to close out the game by 31 points – a margin which flattered the reigning premiers.

Brown and Richardson (three goals each) were the standout performers for the Tigers, Raines showed his usual composure off half-back and Will Thursfield matched the dangerous Ashley Hansen.

Shane Tuck, Kane Johnson and Bowden continued to work hard despite being beaten on the night and Adam Pattison showed great character in a four-quarter effort against two quality opponents in Cox and Seaby.

The Tigers now face Essendon at the MCG next Sunday but must first wait for the match review panel to assess incidents involving Jake King and Luke McGuane.

Kerr's genius denies dogged Tigers (The Age)

Kerr's genius denies dogged Tigers
Mark Duffield at Subiaco Oval | August 19, 2007 | The Age

IT TOOK a virtuoso performance from Daniel Kerr and a brilliant effort at both ends from Adam Hunter to allow West Coast to see off a determined Richmond challenge and remain focused on a top-two berth at Subiaco Oval last night.

Kerr was simply brilliant, seeing off two opponents and having more than 30 touches before Daniel Jackson managed to exert some sort of control over Kerr's influence.

Hunter played in defence but drifted forward to take three massive pack marks and kick three critical goals.

And that, along with seven goals from Quinten Lynch and four from Mark LeCras, was enough to see off a Richmond challenge that had dragged the Tigers to within nine points in a tense third quarter.

West Coast eventually eased clear to win 18.9 (117) to 12.14 (86), while Richmond was left to rue a wasteful 10 minutes in the last quarter when Matthew Richardson dominated All-Australian full-back Darren Glass but missed critical shots at goal.

With Chris Judd (groin) and Ben Cousins (hamstring) rested from the match, the Eagles needed a big effort from Kerr and they got one.

By quarter-time, Kerr had nine touches while his opponent, Richard Tambling, had three — one of which was a dreadful handball turnover across half-back resulting in a soft Eagles goal.

Elsewhere, the Tigers were actually doing OK, despite copping a good old fashioned mauling at the stoppages.

With Tyson Stenglein locking down Richmond's diminutive clearance king Nathan Foley, Kerr dominated at the stoppages for the Eagles, giving them a 10-4 edge in first use of the ball.

But that didn't translate into anything dramatic on the scoreboard, with the Tigers grabbing the lead a couple of times in the first quarter before a late goal to Michael Braun sent the Eagles to quarter-time eight points ahead.

There was no escaping the damage on the scoreboard in the second quarter, though, when the Eagles, mainly through Kerr again, won four of the first five clearances of the quarter to help create a 32-point lead by the 12-minute mark.

By then, LeCras and Lynch had each kicked three goals and the biggest impact the Tigers had managed to make on the Eagles is likely to have a tribunal aftermath, with Jake King cracking Steven Armstrong across the mouth with a clumsy spoiling attempt five minutes in.

With Adam Pattison forced to ruck against Dean Cox and Mark Seaby with only Graham Polak for back-up, some of the Eagles' clearances resembled training drills.

Richardson had made the most of opportunities to kick two goals and Nathan Brown did likewise but the Tigers suffered from having a high proportion of the team's talent isolated deep in the forward line.

Terry Wallace tried to change that in the third quarter, swinging Brett Deledio into the midfield. Deledio's five touches for the quarter had an impact, and while the Tigers had to survive, another early quarter surge thanks to Cox and Kerr took the Eagles five goals clear again. However, the Tigers steadied and reined the Eagles in, kicking three of the last four goals of the quarter to be within 15 points at three-quarter-time.

The Tigers had their chances to pinch the game in the final quarter. Richardson had Glass out on his feet and took two towering marks but sprayed the shots on goal.

Kerr, Lynch run riot for Eagles
19 August 2007   Sunday Herald Sun
Kim Hagdorn

DYNAMIC rover Daniel Kerr saved one of his best performances for a time of need to lead West Coast to a vital victory over Richmond at Subiaco last night.

Kerr commanded an Eagles midfield without captain Chris Judd, Ben Cousins and Andrew Embley as the reigning premiers maintained a strengthening grip on an all-important home final.

Kerr tired as the Tigers threatened to pull off a stunning upset early in the final term, but he had inflicted enough damage as the Eagles kicked away to win by 31 points.

Giant Eagle Quinten Lynch sealed the deal late with his seventh goal, a nonchalant left-foot snap on the run.

Enigmatic Tigers star forward Matthew Richardson squandered two golden chances earlier to possibly snatch the lead with successive set-shot misses.

But Richardson had a rare win with possessions and telling marks over direct opponent Darren Glass.

The Tigers' shabby goal-front finishing probably cost them a second successive unexpected win and one of the season's boilovers.

From the outset the explosive Kerr set a tone for dominance around the packs. He relished the space and latitude he generated running away from his surprise early match-up, Richard Tambling.

After only 13 minutes Kerr took his first break with seven damaging possessions to his credit.

By half-time Kerr, the Eagles' most consistent performer of the season, was heading towards another best-afield performance, as he carved up three opponents with 20 efficient possessions.

Daniel Jackson tightened his endeavours to negate Kerr into the second half, but the little maestro was in a rare zone and unstoppable.

Another Eagles find, Matthew Priddis, won an early mark of respect from Tigers coach Terry Wallace when he was marked by Richmond captain and best minder Kane Johnson.

Similar regard was afforded Richmond's damaging centre-square clearance specialist Nathan Foley with Tyson Stenglein assigned to run with him.

Eagles coach John Worsfold loaded his forward division with addition tall marking options early when Cox started in the goal-mouth and second-tier ruckman Mark Seaby on the ball matching talents with Tigers big man Adam Pattison.

At all times the Eagles had at least three tall forwards, with Lynch and Ashley Hansen the constants. Cox and Mark Seaby alternated up front, along with versatile Brent Staker, enjoying the best form of his career.

The telling effect was a refreshingly long and direct Eagles forward movement, on the back of supremacy around the clearance contests.

But when Richmond threatened to snatch a boilover, West Coast onballers were guilty of not manning up and paying respect to the unheralded Tigers onballers.

Even Worsfold's most faithful trump card trick of sending ace utility Adam Hunter forward worked and further stretched the besieged Tigers defence with handy game-turning goals.

Hunter's staggering big pack mark in the goal square and goal 10 minutes into the final term as Richmond surged at the home side, sealed the issue.

Seaby was impressive with his turn on the ball, along with Cox in the ruck, Kerr, Priddis, Chad Fletcher returning to the side and classy winger Matt Rosa enjoying big possessions through midfield.

Reliable tagger Adam Selwood continued his outstanding season, probably overall adding another big name scalp to his belt with an impressive duel with dangerous Tigers goal-shark Nathan Brown.

Brown, in only his ninth outing for the season finished with three goals and constantly loomed as a danger around goal-mouth packs to emerge among his side's best contributors for the night.

Well there you go.  Bit hard to beat.

So even though he might have stuffed up, he was still considered one of best.

But its so easy to lay the blame at the feet of the man who kicked TWO of our FOURTEEN points, and forget about all else he did....and just by the by....IF Richo had kicked the first of his two misses, chances are he wouldnt have been going for the second, because it would have gone back to the centre and he maynt have got the chance again

Those stats sum up why we lost (no ruckmen and skill errors) although in a few years we might be a rare Victorian side not to hold fears of playing on the wide expanses of Subi.
