Forward Scout: Essendon

Who will take Hird
He is a tough match up because he has the ability to play a variety of positions, so, what do you do? That is the big question.

When he is forward do you put a Luke McGuane on him, who can stifle his influence in the air, or do you use players with good ground-level skills like Andrew Raines or Chris Newman?

Or, do you go with a midfielder like Kane Johnson or Daniel Jackson who can go everywhere with him?

This is why he has been such a great player, because he has so many strings to his bow.

What to expect
It is gong to be a great game and a good battle against two pretty evenly-matched sides.

I guess the key to stopping Essendon is primarily to make sure Scott Lucas and James Hird do not have an impact up forward.

Also, we’ll need to keep an eye out for Jason Winderlich and Scott Camporeale who, in recent weeks, have been doing some damage at the stoppages.

Down back, they have some good solid defenders in Mal Michael and Paddy Ryder, although, they will miss Dustin Fletcher.

Thursfield will take Lloyd

Bowden will take Lucas

Raines will start on Hird - just a tip keep Newman right away from Hird
