Tigers' fringe playing for AFL contracts
The Age
August 31, 2007 - 6:24PM

Richmond coach Terry Wallace has given his players a stark warning as they prepare to end the club's disappointing AFL season on Saturday - last game, lasting impression.

The Tigers play St Kilda at the MCG on Saturday, with many on Richmond's list playing for their careers as inevitable end-of-season changes loom at a club which has won just three matches and drawn one this year.

Already injury-racked Ray Hall and Trent Knobel and forward Kent Kingsley have retired, while other Tigers face delisting or being used as trade bait.

Wallace warned his players the decision on some futures may well be made from their performance against the Saints.

"Terry just spoke to the group about it - sometimes the last game leaves a long impression on the coaching staff in particular," Tigers assistant coach Brian Royal said.

"So when you're reviewing each individual, your performance the last time you stepped out on the field for the Richmond Football Club is pretty important."

The Tigers have shown marked late-season improvement, beating Collingwood and Essendon in two of their past three matches in what Royal hopes will be a springboard for 2008.

"It's important not only for the players but the supporters we finish the season off well," Royal said.

"It's pretty important for us to get momentum going into next season and we've done that two out of the past three games."

A Richmond victory over the Saints would ensure the Tigers avoid the wooden spoon, but it would move the club down the national draft pecking order.

Injury concerns Shane Tuck and Jake King survived the Tigers' final training session - Royal confirming both would play.

So too will Saints veteran Robert Harvey, who returns for what may be his last AFL match should he decide to retire at the end of the season.

St Kilda's finals hopes hinge on the result of Friday's Collingwood-Adelaide match.

A Crows victory would ensure the Saints will not play finals football regardless of whether they beat the Tigers.

Harvey and defenders James Gwilt and Clinton Jones come in for the Saints, with onballer Chris Hyde replacing dumped forward Jay Schulz for Richmond.

i dont think the last game should play most importance noe leave a long lasting impression

the whole year should be analysed and the players should be analysed over their performance during teh 22 rounds not just round 22.

what if say richo gets trounced, has no impact, kicks like a dog and kicks 0.2 and 3 out on the full and couldnt do a thing right, will that mean he will play teh rest of his last season at coburg or get traded , i dont think so,

same as brown, what if he has a real bad on.

but if jackson, hyde, moore etc have bad one then they get delisted!
not right

Who are the fringe players playing tomorrow anyhow? Hyde, Moore and Jacko?  Not many.

So far we know we have one empty spot on our list with the known retirements and talked about promotions:

Out: Gas, Hall, Knobel and Kingsley all retired.

In: King, Gus, Howat (all promoted off the rookie list).

---------------------------
2007 Contract List:

Out of contract: P.Bowden, Coughlan, Hartigan, Hyde, Jackson, Johnson, Krakouer, Meyer, Tivendale.

2008: J.Bowden, Collins, Connors, Edwards, Foley,  McGuane, Moore, Newman, Oakley-Nicholls, Peterson, Pettifer, Polo, Richardson, Schulz, Thursfield, Tuck, White.

2009: Brown, Casserly, Deledio, Hughes, Pattison, Raines, J.Riewoldt, Simmonds.

2010: Tambling

Rookies:
Graham, Howat (both in second year of a possible maximum 2 years)
Clingan, King (both in first year of a possible maximum 2 years)
------------------------------

Just noticed OER's contract list has got Moore contracted till 2008.

Going, going, gawn? ....... Harts and Krak IMO.

On the edge? ......... Paddy, Meyer, Hyde, Schulz (trade)

I still find it odd that Howat is to be promoted.

Agree X. You'd hope that's the case.

Maybe Plough is thinking back to his Tuck vs Fleming decision when he first arrived at Punt Rd. Tuck caught Terry's eye as far as training hard and showing he desperately wanted to remain on our list and he kept his place.
