From Blue to bohemian — a new Pagan ritual

Denis Pagan entered into the spirit of things in his role as main speaker and judge at the Footy Art Show launch by wearing a beret and expounding on a new movement in Australian art called footy impressionism. Actually, he didn't wear a beret. And, as much as there should be, there's no such thing as footy impressionism. But Pagan did enjoy himself among the footy bohemians (now there's a subculture) on Friday night and, in his debut as an art judge, he was pleased to name a painting by Gladstone Park artist Ian McNair as the winning entry. McNair's work Free Kick! No, It's Richo depicts Matthew Richardson being scragged by Carlton defender Bret Thornton. "It just shone out at me," said Pagan. McNair is a Richmond lunatic, having been to every game in the past three years, even the interstate ones. He's also a statistician for the Coburg Tigers. Every week, it affronts McNair to see Richo manhandled without protection from the umpires. "I think Richo gets a rough deal," said the 34-year-old, who runs a public relations business.
