THE off-field exodus at the Western Bulldogs could continue, with Richmond trying to poach recruiting manager Scott Clayton, Mark Robinson writes in this analysis.

Clayton, who is regarded highly within the football industry, is out of contract and one of the targets of the cashed-up Tigers.

Richmond's director of football Greg Miller didn't deny his club's interest yesterday.

"We're certainly going to increase our recruiting team," Miller said.

"We think we've got an outstanding recruiter in Francis Jackson, but we're on the lookout for someone to assist him.

"We have spoken to a number of people at different clubs.

"The club's timing is we'll be adding to our recruiting team following the national draft (November 24) and not before it."

Clayton's future at Whitten Oval could hinge on the results of a highly publicised post-season review.

Further negative press came when Jordan McMahon gave his former club a clip about player welfare on the day the Tigers announced his official arrival at Punt Rd.

Now the target is Clayton.

It's believed Clayton, like Drain, has a verbal undertaking he is wanted by the Bulldogs.

Clayton was recruited to the Bulldogs by current Richmond coach Terry Wallace in 1999.

On the plus side, he's an experienced guy who would have a hell of a lot of contacts out there.

On the minus side, he's a bulldogs man and it's not hard to see the type of player they have recruited in recent times.

When the doggies were flying before this year everyone was praising Clayton. A year is a long time in footy. Didn't the bullies poach Clayton from the Lions?

Don't think 1 person can be held responsible for the fortunes, good or bad, of a club. It is a combination of factors. Doesn't matter how good the players are that you recruit, if they are not coached well or motivated or just have a drop in form or injuries, then they are not going to play well. Football is such a confidence game these days. Get on a role and you're in the finals, lose it a bit and you're 16th. Just look at Geelong, 10th to premiers in 1 season. Look at us 9th to 16th. Go figure?!

Whislt all that is true, Clayton is the man ultimately responsible for the players they draft, and it's easy to see the types of player they have focused on in the past and how that has left them with deficiencies now.

I think everyone would agree we have more than our fair share of extremely light-weight, flanker project players that take 5-6 years to really come on. It concerns me that we're bringing in a guy that is renowned for drafting that sort of player.

Richmond is also putting more resources into off-field support, with Tigers director of football Greg Miller spruiking that the club is significantly increasing its welfare and development program.

Now, they're chasing the Bulldogs' recruiting manager Scott Clayton as well.

The salary cap on playing talent has created a reasonably even competition.

But off-field, the gap between the haves and have-nots is widening.
