Melbourne Geography
« on: October 21, 2007, 08:03:22 AM »
Seeing it's been over 18 years since I've lived in Melbourne, my geography and appreciation of the place might be a little outdated.  One of my brother's is in the process of buying some big ugly place in Dingley.  He has previous lived in Dingley as has my sister and younger brother and the one time I visited their places I was overwhelmed by the stench of the nearby tip.  Needless to say, I wasn't very complimentary when I heard he was considering moving back into the area (tactful I know).  He indignantly told me it was The Grange in Dingley (which means nothing to me) - I am assuming this is some nice new estate.  He's also mentioned some suburb called Clarinda - again I'm scratching my head.  When I lived in Melbourne, Dingley was some dingy place near Springvale.  Would appreciate my fellow OER-rites enlightening me.

Clarinda is a new name for the Area of South Clayton. This area would be south of Centre Road and till about Old Dandenong Road from east to west and running north to south from Huntingdale to about Westall Roads.

There's "The Grange Reserve" south of Westall. Not sure if that's near where your brother is buying. That South Clayton/Dingley area use to be industrial/landfill plus some small farming but as the factories have disappeared it is now being turned into another residential area.

The best thing about it is they've extended South Road  :thumbsup as they build the Dingley bypass.

I think it's like living in deepest, darkest Africa because he's told me next time I visit I should carry an elephant gun for protection.

It's always been rough there though. Infamous for having a gang there named after the postcode - 3174.

Sorry Moi but I didn't think you lived that close to Smellyville.  Sorry if I offended any OER-rites living in Dingley or nearby.

Well my brother has bought the ugly house in the bad suburb so I guess I won't be getting any invites in the near future to come and visit.  He said he had his eye on one great house but it was in the flight path to Moorabbin Airport.  Boo hoo!  I went to a party at Tugun on Saturday and we had jets, helicopters and even the Roulettes all fly low over the house.  Now that's a flight path!!!
