WHEN it comes to the marketing department, Richmond unarguably has no equal. This is not necessarily a compliment.

In the wake of last year's mystifying membership gift of a small scrap of yellow and black dust-cloth — soon dubbed by sections of the Tiger faithful as "the crying towel" — you may have stumbled across this year's brainwave slogan: "The New Tigers of Old."

You may also have had occasion to wonder what in the blue hell that might mean.

On the surface of things, the "new" and "old" cancel each other out, meaning they're the SAME Tigers, which doesn't sound like much of a bargain for the legion of increasingly dyspeptic and anxious-looking Richmond fans.

Some of these are so nervy by now that the sound of any siren — even a police or ambulance one — automatically sinks them into a deep, brooding depression lasting at least six months.

The Roos (24,624) are also ahead of Richmond (24,363) and Melbourne (19,415) on the membership scoreboard.

We always start behind and get a rush towards round 1. About a month or two ago the Roos were well ahead of us with all their publicity and now we're almost level. Give another month and we'll be well ahead and close to 30,000. That of course doesn't include non-ticketed memberships which other clubs add to their ticketed numbers to boost their tally. The Roos also this year have a large component which doesn't barrack for them and joined up for the year simply out of sympathy. How many of these will remain Roo members in 2-3 years time.

the amount of publicity Brayshaw has been able to generate certainly reflects in those figures, their problem isnt this year or even the next, it will be when they are struggling on the field, a great year by the roos last year has also helped them enormously.

i say good on them i hope their future is in Melbourne, for the time been at least.

Would it be too hard for the Herald-Sun to contact the club directly to get the latest membership tallies. I guess it's not all their fault as the RFC website has an old figure from February up.

Memberships surge in Tiger Centenary year

The Tigers have just clicked over the 25,000 mark and are on target to break their all-time membership record, set in 2007, provided they get away to a good start in the ’08 season.

Richmond’s membership numbers are tracking 1200 ahead of where they were this time last year

“It is particularly pleasing for the Club to have signed 25,000 fully-ticketed members at this point of the campaign. We are currently well ahead of the same time last year, which is very positive, but we need this to continue,” said Richmond’s General Manager, Consumer Marketing, Trent Jacobs.

“We have just over 7000 ticketed members yet to renew from 2007, and we also are keen to attract new members into the fold.
