One Good Game Of The Year Wonders
« on: December 03, 2007, 10:25:00 PM »
Often when we play a team there is just ONE player often a mediocre player who will have a day out against us.

Which opposition player(s) from the present and past use to frustrate you the most because they'd play their one good game for the year against us?

Not duds but North's Darren Crocker and Bomber Darren Bewick use to always get under our guard. Chuck in any Geelong key forward from Ablett down to a dud like Brett Spinks :-\. Ben Graham was the one who annoyed me the most  :scream.

1994 Fraser Brown kicked 7 against us at Optus in Round 23
then in Rd 7 99 on a Friday night he kicked a banana from the left forward pocket at the Punt Rd End to seal the game for them in the last quarter.
Brent Heaver another one in 96
Adrian Gleeson always kicked peey little receiver goals when we had done all the hard work to deny their big forwards.
Whenever Anthony Rocca plays well against us I lose it. In rd 4 98 he had a nite out with his bro. Rd 1 2003 is another which springs to mind.
Brett Allison is another who really peed me off.
Alex McDonald also in 1994 kicked 4 goals against us at the g.
Simon Minton Connell got the Swans over the line against us at the SCG in 1994 the year they won the spoon.
Brett O'Farell's first game of footy was for Sydney against us in 1998. Kicked 4 in their 11 point win in rd 13. Did sweet fa for the Swans after that traded to Hawthorn. Thn in rd 14 01 against the Hawks at the G we had them on toast at quarter time he gets injured Nathan Thompson goes in the ruck the game changes hawks home by 58.
Andrew Leoncelli and Guy Rigoni had big games against us in 98 99 00 the former kicked a goal from 50 on the boundary in the last quarter in 2000 after we came back from 45 down at half time and Brodders missed a set shot from 30 to put us in front.
John Longmire was another I loathed ever since he kicked 12 against us on a Friday night in 1990. Brian Beinke had a big quarter for the Crows against us in 2001 after we were 4 up at half time kicked the first of the 3rd and went 26 down at 3 qt time.
Clive Waterhouse always played well against us in dud sides for Freo in the late 90's instigated a few wins for them and nearly got them over the line in others.
Geez I have a list here.
Anthony Mellington cost me a 101,000 footy quad its my fault. He was playing for Fitzroy but switched to North after the Brissy merger and I mate it my perogative to give him a few choice words in 97 when we played the Roos.

Des Headland.

Also, Richmond has a knack of getting a struggling player back into form.

We also let the 'new' guy slip under the guard, Grundy, Edwards... and they have a day out. Then they disappear off the face of the earth... :lol

Terrific memory there HT. I recall that game against the Crows too, but I reckon you'll find Bryan Beinke didn't kick a goal that game, it may have been another superstar in Chris Ladhams.

I went with some Collingwood mates to that '98 game where we were the favourites. Didn't get into the ground until 10 mins in and the game was as good as over as the Pies kicked the first 7 goals :scream. Thankfully good ol' puff puff usually goes missing against us and is good comic relief :lol.

Modra was another who liked playing against us. Kicked 23 (10 & 13) in one year when at Adelaide and then kicked 7 to singlehandedly get Freo across the line by 1 point in the 2000 game where Richo broke his foot and missed the rest of the year.

Thanks Bateman I was sitting Punt Rd end top deck Southern Stand that night and all I remember other than the result was Beinke getting high fives from his team mates while I was fuming at what I was seeing. Crows were kicking to the Punt Rd end as well that quarter. All I know Andrew McLeod was class that night.

I remember Dermie on one leg kicking a lazy 11 against us in 1990.

Even worse is when the duds have their one good career game againt the Tigers, get delisted by the club and then end up getting traded/drafted by Richmond.

Prime example is .... Terry Keays the man child kicks 7 or 8 (I think) against us at Vic Park one day and then we trade a 1st or 2nd draft pick for the dud !!

John Pitura was the biggest one in 1975. Played a handful of great games on the wing for South Melbourne against Francis Bourke and Ian Wilson moves heaven and earth to get him and gives off the Whale, our current recruiter, the 1977 Brownlow Medallist and 50 gorillas in exchange. Just goes to show you we were Kings back then and we still made dud deals and to make it worse Pitura had probably played the best games of his career against us.
