How would you rate Richmond's overall recruiting this year?
« on: December 11, 2007, 02:59:32 PM »
Okay we've had a few hours to take in all our picks today. So how did we all rate how the Club performed in the whole trade, national, preseason and rookie drafts period?

I am genuinely thrilled by the potential this years draft pickup offer for the future of our great club. The last time I felt so optimistic about a batch of players was the 2004 draft.

1   We have the No 1 pick of the National Draft in Cotchin
(don't believe Carlton saying they went for the best player, they went for need over ability in the end particularly considering the Judd trade and picking up 2 midfielders in the last two drafts with No 1)

2   We snaffled the best defender in the National Draft with Rance
Size, height, ability and skill, Rance is a backman specialist who is a masterful choice for our future

3   Shored up our Ruck division with Putt who could also develop into a monster of a forward.

4 Grabbed a player in the PSD that has both youth and talent - Gourdis and was predicted by all the experts to be a first round draft pick. He will be a star in the future for our team.

5  Collard is another unfurfilled talent. With his natural ability and a new start the sky is the limit for this bloke

6  Sylvester is a strong midfielder/defender with height. He carved up the VFL last year in most of the games I saw and will add strength and depth to our midfield.

So adding our first 6 choices to our all ready young talented list you have to start getting excited. I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and its getting brighter by the day!  :woohoo

The cat is a key defender  :shh ;) :D :lol

I went for 9, we did very well this draft but ATM the only query i have is the McMahon/pick 19 conondrum. I really do rate Jordy but 19 was a bit over the top IMHO. If as i believe McMahon was out of contract this could have panned out even better for us.

19. Selwood
67. Gourdis
PSD 1. McMahon

We get everything we have plus Selwood

Probably the best in years.
Only genuine disappointment was the retention of Howat.

Still it's only early days.

8 for me.

I was happy until we got to the choices of Silvester and Howat. They are good VFL players and allow some insurance but i feel we are along way away from needing insurance players. If a few players go down and we finish 14th and not 10th or 11th then who cares? I think we would have been better off going for a speculative player with these picks just in the hope that they came good. With guy's like Ellard, Arrowsmith, Laidler, Sullivan, Kangars and Renton still available, i feel we would have been better to go for these types of players.

In my opinion Howat, Silvester and Cartledge where only ever intended to be listed for one year as the insurance and so that we can delist them without having to pay them out, allowing us to take 3 more rookies next season. With alot of clubs filling up there rookie lists this year with guy's on 2 year contracts, our 3 picks could come very early in the rookie draft next year.

As I've said before Bluey, Port was also after McMahon so he would not have made it to the PSD.

I'm sure that in Years to come people will be saying that it was the 2007 draft that turned our fortunes around and made us regular finals contenders. Very happy with this draft and I gave it an 8.  :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

true tiga, but from i what i understand, McMahon had no interest returning to SA so he could have forced the doggies hand Judd-style

Agree totally.

I asked Miller the question at members draft night if we could have pursued Mc Mahon in the PSD and he actually said yes he could have, but wanted to keep the pick available for a 'name' player if one could be negotiated.

I have seen too many Fioras and Gilmours to get too giddy about draft performances before a balls been kicked, but on the surface i'm rating it an 8.

Alex wouldn't be the best example to use, was speculative even before being drafted

We would have had to delist one more player to use pick 67 but I agree with that bluey. The other query is why re-rookie Howat. Apart from that can't complain as the Club did very well with it's other selections :thumbsup
