I think that Mick would be a fantastic assistant to work under Terry at Tigerland next season. I have listened to him speak a few times on the radio of late and he has a great football brain and a brilliant understanding of the game.

He lifted a club in Tassie to back to back flags and has won 3 in a row at Gisborne since coming back to Victoria.

What are your thoughts?

Big problem is that theres no TAB facility at Punt Road.
Would be better served at a club like Essendon or Western Bulldogs where they have a full TAB facility in there social clubs.
Also Mick has been the "spy" for the Doggies this year.

If he's been the spy for the dogs is there any chance he'll get the gig there? His record sounds pretty good.

I don't think we'd be the only one chasing his services if we do. His record of success at sub-AFL levels as you've mentioned Bulluss speaks for itself.

Tiger McGuane plays down new family tie

Tiger McGuane plays down new family tie
By Lyall Johnson
The Age
November 28, 2004

Those who know Mick McGuane know well how close he is to his family. But, when it comes to his new job at Punt Road, the 1990 Collingwood premiership player said blood ties will not count ahead of the success of the team.

The 155-game veteran and successful country football coach last week received confirmation he had broken back into the AFL. He has been hired by the Tigers as a "forward scout" opposition analyst in an appointment that will bring him together with his 17-year-old cousin, Luke, Richmond's fifth pick in the national draft, No. 36 overall.

But anyone who thought it might be a conflict of interest for McGuane obviously had not asked him. His philosophy on football is simple: get your own ball, know what to do with it when you get it and, if you cannot stand on your own two feet, then you should give the game away. It's the same rules for everyone, even family members.

"I look after Luke, anyway," McGuane said last week of his cousin, who is the son of McGuane's uncle, Gavin, a legend at Queensland's Southport Football Club. "It's not just because I'm with Richmond and I obviously have a close attention to detail with him.

"But it's not my job to look after him now. He's a young man now, he can make his own decisions. He's just got to row his own canoe the right way now and make sure he does everything right and what's expected of him.

"I'm pretty unemotional when it comes to your own getting involved in footy circles. I've always said footy's an impersonal game. And if Luke can't take criticism the right way and takes it personally, he won't succeed in this caper."

The young McGuane was a highly regarded junior and, at 192 centimetres, was selected by the Tigers as a potential key-position player. The older McGuane was handpicked by Terry Wallace after four successful years as coach of Burnie in Tasmania and Gisborne in the Bendigo league, his teams reaching four grand finals, winning three, and clocking up 70 wins from 75 matches.

Yet, for all his talk of being dispassionate towards his cousin when he has to deal with him at Richmond, the Collingwood legend said he is not only thrilled for him to get a chance to break into the AFL, but also thrilled for Luke's father, Gavin, who was blinded 10 years ago in a workplace accident.

"I'm rapt the kid's got an opportunity, but I'm probably more rapt for my uncle," McGuane explained.

"I was actually training that night and I got the message when I was on the training track. And, with how close Gavin and I are, I just jumped on a plane and went straight up there.

"He was managing a bar and tripped over a mat and activated the old barrel system, and all the gas and alkaline just burnt his eyes out. He's got one eye permanently closed and he's got, I think, about 18 or 16 per cent vision in his other.

"The last 10 years has been a little bit of torture, so the announcement of Luke getting a position at Richmond has probably put a bit of those bad times behind him."

McGuane is hoping his new job will help him to establish himself as a senior coach, a vocation that is in the blood. When he won a premiership at Burnie four years ago, he became the fifth of the McGuane clan to coach a senior club to a premiership.

His father, Bryan, was successful as coach of Sebastapol in the 1970s, his uncle Tommy (now deceased) with Bungaree, his uncle Terry took Golden Point to a flag and Luke's father Gavin won with Southport.

Micky McGuane does the Tigers
« Reply #6 on: January 18, 2005, 03:37:01 PM »
Micky McGuane has been doing each day for the past week and a bit on Sports 927 a season preview for each of the Vic clubs.

So far he's done them in alphabetical order which means Richmond's turn is tomorrow morning. I haven't listened to these live (around 7.30-8am I think) but each day they are put up on Sports 927's website. They go for about 5 minutes which doesn't sounds long but it's 5 minutes non-stop so it's pretty detailed. The previews are more on what as a team each side needs to do to improve (strengths/weaknesses that sort of thing). Pretty good IMO and given he's now a scout for us it'll be interesting what he has to say about the Tiges.

Phew! I was a bit worried when I saw the title of this topic.
Debbie did Dallas a lot better. 8)

I was sceptical about McGuane. Got to say he's impressed me with his knowledge and thoughtful reports. I'm glad he's at the club.

Pretty realistic summary there by Mcguane. In that we as supporters need to be patient for success as having a young list means our performances will be up and down. But that youth will inject enthusiasm and a "go for it" attitude into the side. Geez do we need that after the past few years  :help.

His 87 Collingwood comparison is stretching it a bit as most of that side which went on to win the 1990 flag played together and won the U19 premiership in 86. I guess the message there is bringing through a group of talented kids together so they bond. Similar story with North and Pagan. Out of interest the Tiges won the U19's flag in 85 and were runners up in 87 but that didn't result in senior success for us  :(.

Also our clearances stats are weird. Around the ground except for the last month we actually were quite good  :o but at centre bounces we sucked big time. Once the opposition got a goal, they got another one and then another and we were left for dead :scream.

"run and carry" footy  :bow  :bow :thumbsup. See this modern attacking style of play in our training drills. Good-bye to Spud's stop-start ring-a-rosy handball bomb it long blindly to Richo footy  :thumbsup.

Still can't get over us failing to hit a target once in every four kicks  :o. What's the average number of kicks per team per game? About 150-200? Equates to 40 potential turnovers every week  :scream  :banghead  :banghead. No wonder we came last  :help.

I knew we were bad but when I heard that stat yesterday while I was driving to work I nearly drove off the road :o I couldn't believe we were that bad.  >:(

Actually when you think about the type of footy we played (and I know I ma trying hard to forget) - chipping the ball around, thereby creating extra pressure on disposal I suppose it isn't that much of a surprise. :banghead

Not surprisingly McGuane said it is our backline that is major weakness.

the other thing I found interesting was how many clearances Coughlan had overall considering he only played 7 games. That's why it is so important they get him right physically and not rush him back - we need him in the clinches desperately

Mick McGuane was on Sport 927 today

http://www.sport927.com.au/gateway/Daily_Audio/Sound%20Grabs/MM_040205.asx

His roll is as a scout. He's been aligned 4 clubs to plot their demise and one is the Pies  ;D.

Mick said Wallace has got some big decisions to make in regards to the future of some players who are lucky to still be on our list due to still being contracted. Didn't name any names. The heat was on at Richmond.

Also some post RFC election comments from Anthony Mithin.

Now we're going have to put up with rumours of who'll be our next coach for the next 2 months :P.

A caller to 3aw just before 8pm says he's been told by someone high up at Richmond that Mick McGuane has applied for the position.
