Richmond's Schulz sustains cracked rib
 March 1, 2008 - 12:46PM

Richmond tall forward Jay Schulz sustained a cracked rib in the Tigers' AFL practice match win over Sydney, the club said.

Schulz was X-rayed on Saturday, after colliding with teammate Matthew Richardson during Richmond's 25-point win in Canberra on Friday night.

He will miss Friday's practice match against Geelong at Skilled Stadium, but should be available for the Tigers' season-opener against Carlton on March 20.

Two other players, tall defender Graham Polak (bruised heel) and ruckman Troy Simmonds (quad tightness) also had injury concerns.

But Simmonds has been cleared to play against the Cats, while Polak might miss that match, but will be available for round one.

Bad luck to Sarge but at least he won't be out for too long. The two week prognosis on here wasn't far off.

Good to hear Simmo is fine. If there is any doubt then they should rest him next week too.

Sports tonight just showed the collision. To me it looked more like Lewis Roberts-Thompson collected Sarge rather than Richo. Richo continued through whereas LRT bounced off Sarge.

Depends on how severe the crack is. In any case some footballers in the past have played on with a crack rib.

yes l know many players have but its very dangerous & not recommended
we dont want players on the field not 100% fit like last season it gains nothing & holds back others careers
The club can do without him while he fully recovers & play Hughes IMO is the better options & have Patto & Simmonds resting down there from the ruck instead of sitting resting on the bench

Definately depends on how bad it is.
It'll be up to the medicos to make that decision.
Hopefully he's available for selection come round 1.

I've had broken ribs and they are bloody painful.

Somtimes there's a tendency for then to take a while to heal.

I would not risk anyone with cracked ribs - agree with Monk - can be very dangerous indeed

Sarge was at training today sitting in the front row watching in his RFC tracky top and footy in hand. A friend of mine spoke to him and he said he's hoping for round 1 but if not then he'll definitely be back by round 2. Sarge was initially sitting there looking pretty glum but he had pecked up a bit by the end of training and was joking with the boys.
