Johnson backs deputies

RICHMOND captain Kane Johnson has been so impressed by his new deputies Chris Newman and Nathan Foley that he would happily hand the reigns to either of them.

Johnson said the recently appointed vice captains were both capable of stepping up to higher honours.

“Hopefully one of them will stand up in the next year or two and want to take over the club,” Johnson said.

“I think they’re both very good candidates and at this stage it’s probably level-pegging.”

But the 29-year-old said he did not know how long it would be before he would hand over the leadership. “I’ve got no idea, we’ll take it year by year at the moment and see what the club wants.”

Batten down the hatches, WA Tiger, we're in for a rocky ride  :rollin

Well, I think he's right and one of those two will be captain (eventually).  I would give to Newmo at the moment, I think he's a shade ahead of Foley given his performances over the last couple of weeks.

Yeah the hatches have been down for a while Moi.. :thumbsup. Kane Johnson is finally coming out and saying a bit isn't he, good to see. I would have to agree with you regrding Newman, I originally said Foley, but Newy just seems to have that bit more of an edge with his general all over the ground play.

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.

"we’ll take it year by year at the moment" - Now that's a Frawleyism,4 real. :pray

"and see what the club wants.” - Spoken like a man with true gumption and leadership qualities...someone who knows what they want. :wallywink

No doubt we'll have a new captain next year. Sugar's comments pretty much confirm it IMHO. Newy would be frontrunner at this stage but if Foley guns it again this year then I think now he'll get the nod as someone who can influence games out of the centre.
