A road more black than yellow
Rohan Connolly | March 16, 2008 - 4:00AM

What's in their favour?
In the wreckage of a disastrous 2007 came at least a glimmer of hope late in the season via stirring victories over Collingwood and Essendon, portents for a hopefully brighter future. Jordan McMahon and Mitch Morton should help ease the dearth of class, Nathan Foley is a long-term leader of the Tiger midfield, Jake King a revelation as a small defender, and injury-riddled trio Mark Coughlan, Nathan Brown and Troy Simmonds are ready to deliver closer to their best more frequently.

What's not?
The perennial problems persist at Punt Road, most notably a glaring lack of skill, some of the most senior Tigers their worst offenders in the turnover stakes. Lack of quality talls is a major issue, particularly in the ruck, where Simmonds has precious little support, Adam Pattison and Graham Polak willing but not able enough. The Tigers have been more than patient waiting for supposedly talented youth to emerge, but the likes of Richard Tambling, Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls and Danny Meyer are sorely testing the coaching staff's patience.

Stepping into the spotlight?
Though he already qualifies as a Richmond "name", Brett Deledio could make a mark this year as a fast-leading, goalkicking forward to which he was used with effect late last season. Will Thursfield increasingly looks a long-term option as a key defender with King alongside him mopping up. Dean Polo was derailed by injury in 2007 but should be able to pick up where he left off the season before, Luke McGuane impressed late last season in defence, and Kelvin Moore showed genuine pre-season improvement.

In their wildest dreams?
The veterans Matthew Richardson, Joel Bowden, Kane Johnson, Brown and co. stay healthy and in form, ruckman Simmonds stands up and gives his on-ballers a genuine chance, and recruits McMahon and Morton lift the standard of ball use across the ground. Finals remain, though, a far-off goal.

The reality?
Richmond's stocks of talent are simply too low to be able to compete with the bulk of the competition, let alone the likes of Geelong. Unless there's a raft of kids who emerge unexpectedly as a group, the Tigers just don't have the armoury. Bottom four looks likely.

ROBERT WALLS  16th
I sense Terry Wallace and his team are keeping quiet, as they brace themselves for a long losing season. They field teams that are too small and, with sub-standard skills, continually turn the ball over.

ROHAN CONNOLLY
16th Looks like the same, sad old story for the Tigers in 2008. Too few genuine stars, too few emerging to help them and too little skill across the board to compete with the big guns. Richardson, Brown, Deledio and the returned Coughlan can't do it all.

Wow, I think Robbo's really was good now this rubbish is printed.  They did no research at all on that copy paste, copy paste.  Poorly written piece.

Actually I found the Age lift out more entertaining than the HUN's...

Caro had us finishing 16th (seriously can understand why most are doing that bcos it's the easy option - don't agree of course) but she had Melbourne making the 8 :gobdrop

Then of course there is Rohan who's got us finishing 16th as well but has his beloved Bombers finishing 8th :gobdrop

At least Caro isn't as deluded as Rohan :rollin :rollin

Didnt they say the same about the Kangaroos last year?

Now Im not saying that we're going to improve that much but still its an example.

Im sure you an example the other way too but I just dont think we should be reading that much into it.

As reigning wooden spooners and after that Saints game it's no surprise everyone is tipping us to finish last again.

Then of course there is Rohan who's got us finishing 16th as well but has his beloved Bombers finishing 8th :gobdrop

ROHAN CONNOLLY 8th The new-look Bombers could surprise plenty this season with their across-the-ground pace and run from half-back. The spine of Michael, Fletcher, Lucas and Lloyd is strong, up-and-comers like Dyson, Jetta and Dempsey are ready, and the kids are willing.

Forbesy on Y&B took the words right out of my mouth - "up and comer Ricky Dyson"  :rollin. He's 22 and in his 5th season for crying out loud and done bugger all. Bomber fans wanted him delisted last year. Yet Tambling who's a year younger and had one less season is a hack according to Rohan  ::).

2007 stats:
Games  Disp.   Marks    Tackles    G.B   Avg G
Tambling   20       13.6     4.7        2.5        17.9   0.9
Dyson       11        12.6    2.6        1.5          3.2   0.2

The bombers with that same aging spine won just 2 of their last 10 games (one of which Carlton tanked) and 7 of their wins were by 2 goals or less thanks to Hird getting them across the line. Take your red and black glasses off Rohan  :lol.

Perhaps we need to send Rohan my post from a few months back on the stages that Essendon fans will be going through over the next few years.
If you all recall my post then you would all know that Rohan is firmly regimented in Stage 1 Head In The Sand Stage. :lol

From the Age:
Richard Hinds
March 17, 2008

1. Geelong
2. Hawthorn
3. Port Adelaide
4. St Kilda
5. Sydney
6. Brisbane
7. West Coast
8. Collingwood
9. North Melbourne
10. Adelaide
11. Fremantle
12. Bulldogs
13. Essendon

14. Richmond

Case for:
Expect the Tigers to start strongly with coach Terry Wallace under pressure to get results in the fourth year of his contract. If Nathan Brown has finally regained fitness after a broken leg, he will add immeasurable class to the attack. A handful of good young players, led by Nathan Foley, add depth.

Case against: An extremely fragile list is still heavily reliant on ruckman Troy Simmonds and veterans such as Matthew Richardson and Joel Bowden.

Range: 12-16.

15. Carlton
16. Melbourne

12 out of 15 Age "experts" though chose us for the spoon. The other 3 chose Melbourne.

Well if you have got to have a spoon this years sounds like a good one lol.

Seriously, speculation at this time of is just plain silly. I don't think any of us are particularly kidding ourselves that this is going to be an amazing year for the RFC. Even so, if anyone claims that tipping an exact ladder position is based on anything but guesswork, that's just delusional. If they are correct at the end of the season then that's luck, pure and simple.

I hate the off season, paper is full of drivel.  :-\ Roll on round 1!
