Tuesdays with Terry
« on: March 18, 2008, 12:36:56 PM »
Just on SEN. First Tuesdays with Terry for the year.

* Setting up for Fev playing. Selecting side accordingly.

* Was surprised it came out so close to the start of season but Plough wouldn't comment on it and said it's a Carlton matter.

* Morton, McMahon will both be playing.

* Cogs? Fit and available but wouldn't say if he'll play.

* Final team not submitted until tomorrow arvo.

* Was surprised by Demetriou's comments. Rang him up for clarification. Fine with them after talking with him in the context they were said and that their was no malice from Demetriou.

Edit: * Sugar more than likely to get the job on Judd.

SEN played a bit more....

* Thought Demetriou's comment were strange as he had a contract for another year but once he rang up and spoke to Demetriou it was all fine. Asked him why it would be the way he would go with his comments. Terry told Demetriou if we are 3-1 his comments will go away but if we're 1-3 they'll be repeated which wouldn't help anyone. Terry told him he was frustrated we were being accused towards the end of last year of playing for picks. In the end we were both saying the same thing. Coaches have a responsibility to present their side in the best possible way.

* Our natural full-back Thursty will play full-back whether Fev is there or not.

* Confident in our leadership group as they have been outstanding and exemplary in their behaviour as has the whole group. It's been a frustrating past 12 months for us so it could be easy for one of our blokes to go off the rails as young blokes do but we've held tight.

Fevola's fate won't change anything: Wallace
By Luke Holmesby
1:54 PM Tue 18 March, 2008

RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace says any penalty imposed on errant Carlton forward Brendan Fevola by the Blues would not affect the Tigers’ preparation for Thursday night’s clash.

Carlton’s leadership group hasn’t announced any penalty for Fevola’s latest off-field indiscretion, but Wallace said he would make no changes to his team if the Blues forward missed round one.

“I think as a match committee and as coaches you always plan for the best side to be out in the market place,” he said.

“Clearly Carlton have got some decisions of their own that they have to make over the next 48 hours but it doesn’t change any of our planning.”

Wallace said Will Thursfield would line up at full-back on Thursday night regardless of whether Fevola was his opponent.

He would not comment on what action he would take if he were coaching Fevola, but used the opportunity to praise his players for their off-field conduct.

“It would disappoint me, [but] we’ve got to understand that there’s 44 individuals running around at each of the clubs,” Wallace said.

“We’ve had a pretty frustrating time in the last 12 months and it would be easy for one of our blokes to go off the rails, have a bender and do whatever young blokes do. I think our guys have understood they have a fair responsibility to turn this club around.

“One thing I’m confident of at the moment is we have a fantastic leadership group. The way they’ve handled our players off the field is outstanding.”

Wallace said he believed player empowerment was important to help the playing list mature and be accountable for their own actions, and that the leadership group and coaching staff would work together if a player transgressed.

“We all try to work our disciplines as well as we can. As a coach you never know what’s around the corner.”

Injury-free Richmond raring to go
The Age
March 18, 2008 - 5:10PM

Richmond coach Terry Wallace believes an injury-free list entering the AFL campaign vindicates his decision to keep competitive training work to a minimum during the pre-season.

The Tigers will enter Thursday night's season opener against Carlton at the MCG at full strength, a far cry from 2007 when they began without key players Nathan Brown, Troy Simmonds, Mark Coughlan and Will Thursfield and lost their first nine games.

Wallace said Richmond had deliberately eased off body-on-body work at training over the summer.

That means last year's wooden spooner starts this season with no major injury problems, but also no excuses.

"Over the last two or three years we've had something like 27 or 28 fractures to separate bones to players in the side," Wallace said.

"A lot of our injuries have been almost 18-month injuries, they've occurred in one season, had a player miss most of the pre-season and then that's impacted on his next season.

"But everyone's fit and well ... so that's a lot better shape than we've been in the last couple of years.

"We wanted to make sure from a football work perspective we didn't over-burden them.

"The grounds are getting harder and harder ... and we thought we lost about six guys last year with stress-related fractures in the lead-in to the season, and this year we thought we've got to get to round one with all our players up and running.

"You've always got a better chance of kicking off the season well if you've got most of the blokes out there."

This season shapes as a huge one for Richmond and their coach given finishes of 12th, ninth and last in the first three campaigns of Wallace's five-year contract.

Although annoyed at having his side written off by so many over the off-season, Wallace said he had deliberately kept a low profile over the summer so not to be accused of trying to spin positives in the Tigers' build-up.

But he acknowledged both he and his players had to handle the extra scrutiny well in 2008.

"What happens in this game is the microscope gets aimed at one person or one club and if you handle that well - the Kangaroos were in the same position last year and they handled it very well in the early part - all of a sudden the cannons get aimed somewhere else," he said.

"We've got a responsibility to get out and play some good footy and we believe we've copped a fair bit over the summer when there hasn't been a ball kicked in earnest yet.

"But that's the nature of when you're 16th, you've got to wear that and do something about it."

The only Tigers sidelined at the moment are Danny Meyer and draftee Trent Cotchin.

No surprise after last year but we still had a few ankles. Connors has missed a fair chunk of the preseason because of it although he's back playing now.

Good posting O-E, I also like where Wallace says that about 8 players that thought they would be picked probably won't and that they and their fans won't be happy. Gee we might be starting to get a bit of depth!!

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.
