Raise money or sink, auditor warns Dees

IF MELBOURNE Football Club does not boost its finances, it risks being unable to pay debts and could even go out of business, its auditors have warned.

An analysis of audited figures for 2007 raises doubts about the club's ability to pay its debts if it cannot lift revenue from membership and sponsors.

"If the club is unable to successfully generate sufficient funds from their revenue sources … there is uncertainty whether the club will be able to continue as a going concern," the Ernst and Young audit report states. The report highlights the club's recent debt reduction efforts.

The club made a net loss of $3million and an operating profit of $96,689 for 2007, down on the previous year's $790,797 profit.

For a club that has been the only one where its members voted to merge you've got to wonder if they have the passion of other Vic clubs to save themselves. Gudnik's money when he was president couldn't even right the ship.

Another heavy defeat this time by 95 points and now with the cold weather settled in with snow hitting the slopes nice and early it will be a very grim season for the Dees playing in a virtually empty stadium with virtually all their fans getting the tyre chains out for the Range Rovers for the trip up the mountain.
A baptism of fire to say the least for poor old Dean Bailey. Combined losses in the first two rounds of 199 points and a very sub standard list.

Bailey has walked into a nightmare. What's the shortest stint for a new coach?

Mick Nunan coached Fitzroy for 12 games in 96.
Malcolm Blight coach North for 16 games in 81.
I am sure there are shorter stints where the incumbent coach was sacked.

Good memory HT74. I think Blight was only at the Saints too for only 16 weeks because he preferred playing golf on the Gold Coast. Cost them $1m too.

I can remember Schimma only lasting 1 preseason game but he wasn't a new coach.

Schimma was coach though from 1991 and when he got sacked it was 1993 pre season.
Sometimes coaches who have been at therir clubs for a few years do get sacked very early in a season. Remember Terry Wheeler in 1994 coached the Dogs to a 2 point win against us in Rd 1 at the Whitten Oval yet was sacked after an 88 point loss to Geelong at Kardinia Park in Rd 2.
Damian Drum also lasted 9 rounds in 2001 after 9 straight losses.
Eade lasted 12 games in Sydney in 2002 as did Gary Ayres at Adelaide in 2004.

Dees told 'face up to the crisis'

THE AFL has delivered a stunning broadside to the Melbourne Football Club, informing the Demons' board that its brand was meaningless and that it virtually stood for nothing in 2008, the club's 150th season.

In a full and frank assessment of the club's dire predicament delivered by the competition's governing body three days ago, Melbourne was told it had to face up to its financial crisis and dreadful public image if it had any chance of digging itself out of its black hole.

Not only has Melbourne's debt blown out dramatically in recent months but the club's projected profit has dropped by $1 million thanks to its current perilous state.
