The Hawks & their Process
« on: August 16, 2004, 11:13:42 PM »
Fair dinkum do they know what they are doing?

Listening to Dermie on the wireless - clearly not.

Eade has signed with the Bulldogs, Dermie reckons that it isn't Hawthorns fault if these people say they're gonna talk to the Hawks and then they don't ::). But the Hawks don't seem to pursuing anyone with any great intensity. The Tigers went full throtal after Wallace, ditto the Doggies with Eade (well done Doggies btw) - HAwthorn are just going through their "process".

Newsflash Dermie - you interviewed Wallace on a Thursday and didn't interview anyone else while you were waiting for Terry's announcement (who wasn't thier first choice they say). By last Friday you still hadn't bothered to formally interview Eade - just organised a time for a meeting this week.

Struth.... I am sorry but Hawthorn appear to be a rabble at the moment. They will appoint Ayres and that will prove it - 3rd choice :P :'( ::)

Second time in less than a week that Dermie has had to backtrack to make out the Hawks hadn't lost out.

Hawthorn wasted so much time and energy chasing after people who they had stuff all chance of getting - Matthews, Pagan, Judd - while we, the Crows and Dogs remained in the realms of reality. The hawkers only have themselves to blame. I've had the thought for a while now that the Hawks are where we were a year ago. I still think they believe that their list is better than it is.

IMO they should stick with Donald McDonald but I think Ayres will get the gig due to him being Dermie's mate. What a professional way to select your coach  ::). Anyway their prob  ;D.

It sounds pretty clear to me Dermott just wants Ayres.
I wonder if the rest of the Hawks board feel the same.
Even if they do want Ayres, you'd hope he is successful, because they seem to have burnt a few potential coaches in the process.
I think we have problems at Richmond, but can anyone imagine the ego clash at Hawthorn with Dermott and Dunstall.

Can just picture Derm on the radio after WCE announce Judd extending his contract...

"yeah, look, we weren't really that keen on Juddy. He was our second choice...a smokescreen if you will. We're still in with a chance of nabbing our main target...FIORA!"  :scream

They better sound out Spud quick, before the Saints snap him up too!  :lol :rollin

From today's Age - Jake I couldn't have siad it better myself  :rollin

Hawthorn, it seems, had no plan B. There was Plough, then "we'll wait and see; we'll talk to Rocket and Ayres and Harvey and assess them".

and....

Hawthorn, meanwhile, will continue with its process. To date, that process has involved talking to coaches who then sign with other clubs.   :lol

It's fine to run a meticulous, detailed process when there is no competition between clubs, but in 2004, with four vacancies, it was a coaches' market.

In a coaches' market, fortune favours the decisive - there isn't time to test candidates in depth when a rival club is circling with a nice contract. The Hawks, like their team, haven't been quick enough off the mark.

It seems the Tigers and now the Doggies were the most decisive and look what ya get  :thumbsup :rollin

Sorry but I am enjoying this  :rollin

Sorry but I am enjoying this  :rollin

Aren't we all  :thumbsup.

It's great we're no longer a laughing stock when it comes to picking a new coach. They're a happy team at Hawthorn  :rollin

It seems more than likely that they will get Ayres.

If nothing else, he would command the players’ respect.  After 10 years as a senior coach and no premiership though, there has to be doubts about his ability to win one.

I just reckon he would benefit from being out of the game first, before taking on another coaching job.  As he seems so fixed in his ways that he doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with the way he coaches, even though he hasn’t achieved the ultimate success in all that time.

Also, he came in on the back of what Blight had done at both Clubs and all but run those two team lists down to the point of needing a total overhaul and virtually developed no players along the way.

At least Wallace and Eade have had a chance to sit back and see where they could improve, before taking on their next coaching roles.

How was Dermot Brereton on TFS last night, trying to justify why they didn’t have a Coach yet and saying that Hawthorn does things differently to other Clubs and all but taking a swipe at Richmond, the Bulldogs and Adelaide.

I wasn’t paying all that much attention, but from what I heard, he made it sound as though Hawthorn know what they are doing and other Clubs don’t. :rollin

Seems like he doesn’t even know the process his own Club has adopted to get a new Coach, yet knows the process other Clubs went through to get theirs. :-\

It was hilarious TS wasn't it. He was trying to say that we were undemocratic having a small panel (despite them each having roughly 20+ years of footy expertise) to pick our coach and that by us getting Wallace and the Dogs Eade we didn't allow the applicants to say that they wanted to coach us first. Nah Dermie....Terry just turned up to Richmond interviews and then agreed to coach us for the hell of it  ::).

How about Hawthorn needing everyone from the president down to the bootstudder to agree on the new coach. So much for decisiveness and leadership. No wonder their own supporters think they are a rabble. The "new Richmond" was the quote on hawkheadquarters  :lol

If Dermie is the head honcho for selecting a coach then maybe arriving late (apparently normal) to the meeting with Wallace contributed to Richmond being chosen. Very unprofessional.

I don’t know if it would have been all that hilarious for Hawk supporters though MT, they must’ve been cringing.  He may have been a great footballer, but just seems out of his depth here and it’s like there’s no direction coming from anywhere else.  That’s what it looks like from the outside, anyway.

One of the reasons that Wallace chose Richmond was because he was dealing mainly with Greg Miller and receiving consistent communication the whole time, rather than dealing with a number of people and getting mixed messages, which would come across as unprofessional.

But as you say MT, what would people with more than 20 years experience in the AFL know?

Crawford quits/pushed out as captain

Crawfs has "quit" as captain (it's not Thursday today = TFS surprise surprise). Not a happy camper either. He wouldn't do a press conference to announce it.

We're a happy team at Hawthorn  :rollin.
