Clubs move to lock in stars
Greg Denham | April 08, 2008 | The Australian

BRISBANE's Jonathan Brown, Hawthorn's Lance Franklin, St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt and Port Adelaide's Chad Cornes head a hit list for the new Gold Coast club mooted to start in 2011.

Agents working behind the scenes for the new club have identified the four elite players in a bid to lure at least two of them north as marquee players when the 17th club licence is activated.

But the 16 clubs are moving swiftly to ensure they don't lose any of their star players to the Gold Coast, which will be armed with an abundance of cash in pursuit of quality players.

The second-tier players the Gold Coast are interested in include first-year Adelaide ruckman Kurt Tippett, Brisbane stuff Daniel Merrett, Richmond's Andrew Raines, who all hail from Southport, and fellow Queenslanders David Armitage (St Kilda) and North Melbourne ruckman/forward David Hale.

Ricky Nixon said he's told all his clients not to sign past 2010. Apparently Buddy is signed to 2010.

the thing is we dont have to wait for gold coast to move in b4 we start losing players.

i feel we may lose lids and others to another team if we dont sign him up asap.

rodan and otto have set an example of what may happen when u leave a rabble like the rfc.

players play to be part of a grand final.

expect to lose a few players come season's end or even next year when we struggle again.

Denham (who isn't the most reliable journo for info) said on KB's show that the AFL will introduce some form of free agency by 2010 to help out the GC team.

Yeah sign to 2010 so even if you have no intention of going to the GC you demand an even more ridiculous salary by saying "I might."  ::)

Would be a shame to see the son of our former champ not come on with us.
I thought he was showing some promise this season before his injury.
Raines is not our worst that's for sure.

his pretty bad none the less.
very poor disposal, has no footy smarts and runs into traffic all the time.

compare him to heath shaw. 3rd i think in the rising star behind raines.

gee whiz what a gun shaw has turned into. completely different progress for raines

Totally agree Daniel they can have Raines and hopefully they can give us a few ripe pineapples to eat to seal the deal.
