Played CHB last week so was matched-up which showed how good he was getting 37 touches.

Caro gave Joel 3aw's "chop" tonight. She said Richmond is going well so leave him in the VFL at least for another week.

Healy said if Joel does come back it'll be as a forward.

RICHMOND defender Joel Bowden will have to bide his time for at least another week after missing the Tigers' clash against Hawthorn at the MCG tomorrow.

The Tigers confirmed an unchanged line-up from last week's draw with the Western Bulldogs when it sent Bowden and fellow emergency Daniel Jackson to line up for Coburg in yesterday's Anzac Day VFL game.

Bowden was dumped after Richmond's Round 3 match against Collingwood, with the Tigers' growing depth keeping him out of the top 22.

But he played a key role in Coburg's come-from-behind victory against Box Hill yesterday, kicking two goals and winning high praise from his coach Jade Rawlings.

"He's too good a player to be playing VFL for too long," Rawlings said.

"He's doing everything he can to get back in the Richmond side and he's ticked all the right boxes."

He seemed Genuine yesterday, not just pumping the boys up and celebrating becasue he had to, but because he was into it.
Could be a blessing in disguise for Bowden and the senior team when he gets his way back in.

THat's great and all but how was his first half?

I wouldnt like to think a senior player who should be playing 4 quarters of footy will get back there by a half personally.

joel resting up fwd in the second half because he was totally crap down back does not mean he is getting closer to a call up..  joel did not impove on bit with his defensive efforts, second efforts and tackling yesterday and also made really bad decision making and skill errors. keep him in coburb

Joel's biggest problem at the moment IMO is it looks like he's lost a yard of pace. He was never quick but right now he looks slow. He is nearly 30 but you also look slow when out of form.

Frankly he is quite slow in comparison to the like of King and McMahon.

However, you'd think on pure abilty Bowden should be in the side well before McGaune. However I'm more than happy to continue with the younger of the two.

I'd only like to see Bowden return to the side in a similar role as Richo - not get in the way of development, ie. allow a future back 6 to be put in place as Richo did to the forward line (hopfully he is keep on a wing).

Bowden for Hyde, maybe. He'd be a handful as a 6th/7th forward.

RICHMOND'S dual All-Australian defender Joel Bowden is being reinvented as a forward. The Tigers veteran and two-time club best-and-fairest has played the past three games for Coburg in the VFL as a half-forward.

Bowden has been one of Coburg's best in all three games as he strives to claw his way back into the senior side.

The classy left-footer, who turns 30 in June, has almost certainly said goodbye to playing as a defender at AFL level, but remains an option in the front half when the opportunity comes.

"First of all, his attitude since coming back has been exemplary," Coburg coach and Richmond assistant Jade Rawlings said after training at Punt Rd Oval yesterday.

"I know Joel very well and he's been a standout player for this footy club for a long time. He's embraced his new role, he's embraced the culture of the Coburg footy club, the younger players, and I really admire him for that.

"You'd expect him to be a very good player at the (VFL) level because of the type of player he has been and still is.

"As long as he keeps doing the things we're asking of him, he'll keep putting his name up for selection."

But the 238-game veteran knows that with Richmond's strong form and good run with injury, the competition for a half-forward spot is hot.

Former West Coast forward Mitch Morton has been a spark in that spot over recent weeks and Kayne Pettifer, who has kicked eight goals in the past two VFL games, is also making strong claims.

Rawlings said Pettifer was also embracing challenges presented to him.

"He's had a couple of solid games - statistically really good - he's progressively making improvements in areas we've asked him to," Rawlings said.

"It's frustrating for him. He's got to a pretty good level in his career and now he's had to go back (to Coburg) and fight his way back into the (Richmond) side. But his attitude towards wanting to improve and get back in is as good as anyone's."

After a draw against the Western Bulldogs and a narrow loss to Hawthorn, the Tigers will be looking to continue their strong recent form against St Kilda at Telstra Dome on Saturday night.

Joel had to adapt a new style when chucked down back & its not easy going from defender to forward but he will if anyone can
