Richmond Football Club today officially launched its 2008 VFL/AFL Centenary year celebrations, unveiling “100 Years of Tiger Treasures” as the centre-piece of the festivities.

The Tiger Treasures comprise the 100 greatest moments, players and people in Richmond’s proud 100-year history of league football.

Richmond president Gary March said the Tiger Treasures concept was an ideal way to celebrate the Club’s heritage.

“From humble beginnings, the Richmond Football Club has risen to be one of the most successful clubs in the past 100 years of VFL/AFL football,” he said.

“During this journey, it has been the source of inspiration for the legion of fans that have followed the Club.

“Many of the biggest names in the entire game’s history have been involved at Richmond and through the Tiger Treasures we’re able to pay fitting tribute to them.”

The Club has nominated 10 Treasures in 10 different categories to form the 100 Tiger Treasures, with Richmond members and supporters invited to vote to decide the best of the best in each category.

Richmond’s Former Players and Officials also will cast their votes to help determine the winners in two of the key Tiger Treasures categories – Strong and Bold and Class of the Century.

The full list of Tiger Treasures categories is:

•           Marks of the Century
•           Goals of the Century
•           Brave Acts of the Century
•           Servants of the Century
•           Defining Moments of the Century
•           Individual Performances of the Century
•           Controversies of the Century
•           Strong and Bold of the Century
•           Class of the Century
•           Premierships of the Century

Winners of the 10 Tiger Treasures categories will be announced at a special black tie function the Club is holding at Crown Palladium on Friday night, June 27, which will kick-start a massive Yellow and Black weekend of Centenary celebrations.

On the following morning (Saturday, June 28) at Punt Road Oval, the “Tiger Centenary Experience” will enable thousands of Richmond supporters to mingle with the Club’s all-time greats, get their autographs, take photos of the premiership cups and reflect on the Tigers’ wonderful heritage.

After that, the action moves across Yarra Park to the MCG, where Richmond will take on arch-rival Carlton in a Blockbuster clash being billed as “100G at the G”.  The Club is calling on all Tiger supporters to help pack the ‘G’ to the rafters with 100,000 spectators to honor all those who have donned the famous Yellow and Black colors over the past century.

The Richmond team will take to the field for this ‘Blockbuster’ clash in a replica of the guernsey worn by the Tigers of 1908, in the Club’s debut season of league football.

“100G at the G will be a match to remember. If you can only make it to one game in 2008, this is the one to be at,” said Richmond’s CEO Steven Wright.

“With fantastic pre-match entertainment, and both clubs showing promising early-season form in 2008, it promises to be an epic encounter.”

Richmond also announced that a selection of top-quality Centenary memorabilia and merchandise would be available for purchase throughout the year, including mini replica premiership cups, inscribed with the years of the Tigers’ 10 league premierships; a magnificent montage of the Club’s ‘Immortals’ of the Century – Jack Dyer, Kevin Bartlett, Francis Bourke, Tommy Hafey and Royce Hart; and a superb 224-page book showcasing the 100 Tiger Treasures of the past 100 years.

“As you can see, 2008 is a very special year for the Club.  With positive signs on-field, the Tiger is awakening and we will be ready to roar as we enter our second century in the AFL competition,” Wright said.

Great initiatives by the club, geez it would be fantastic if we got 100,000 people to a game vs Carlton. These are very good announcements. Hopefully the memorabilia will be good to.  :clapping

I always thought there were more vertical stripes and they were thinner. Anyway at least that one is symmetrical unlike that shocker we wore against the Saints in the first heritage game (the 70 point flogging in Nathan Burke's 300).

Good to hear on the Ch 10 news March say that KB and Sheedy will be involved our centenary celebrations  :thumbsup.

They must have dusted the cobwebs off the 10 shiney premierships cups on show today at Punt Rd  8). It probably won't happen but it'd nice to see Richo holding premiership cup No. 11. He deserves one. lol Rainesy getting too carried away with the one he was holding. Good to also see St Francis there today also. I wonder if Caro was watching  ::).

Tigers looking for 100,000 reasons to celebrate
Nick Sheridan | April 24, 2008

http://www.realfooty.com.au/ffximage/2008/04/23/wbAFLrichmond_wideweb__470x293,0.jpg

RICHMOND wants to celebrate its centenary year by drawing 100,000 fans to the MCG for its round-14 match against Carlton.

The idea, named "100G at the 'G", was announced by Richmond's chief executive Steven Wright at the launch of the club's centenary celebrations at Punt Road yesterday.

"We want to fill the MCG to the rafters — 100,000 people joined together for one purpose, which is to honour this great club and all who have worn the famous yellow and black since 1908," Wright told a gathering of Tigers legends that included Frank Bourke, Neville Crowe, Roger Dean, Francis Bourke, Geoff Raines and Dale Weightman.

The goal is an ambitious one, given that the largest ever attendance at an AFL/VFL home-and-away game was 99,346 when Melbourne played Collingwood in round 10, 1958.

The last time any AFL/VFL game drew a crowd over 100,000 was for the 1986 grand final, when Hawthorn beat Carlton in front of 101,861 people.

Tigers' vice-captain Matthew Richardson also put out the call to fans to set a new record. "I think for all the Richmond fans, if ever they want to get to a game against Carlton at the MCG, this is the day to do it and I'm pretty confident we can get the 100,000 there," he said.

The round-14 match will be the culmination of a weekend of celebrations marking the centenary of Richmond's entry into the VFL.

They include a gala dinner on Friday, June 27, and a "Centenary Experience" at Punt Road on Saturday, June 28, before the game. Richardson joined past Tigers greats in brandishing the club's 10 premiership cups.

"I've always been a Richmond supporter, so I grew up following a lot of these guys, so to get to spend time with them, hang out and listen to all the old stories — they seem to get bigger and bigger every year the stories — but I'm pretty happy to listen to them," he said.

Richardson said he and his teammates were feeling positive after their recent form yielded a win and a draw, putting them inside the top eight with two-and-a-half wins from five games.

Richardson was disappointed with the result in the immediate aftermath of last week's draw against the Bulldogs, but his view had changed since then.

"After (we) settled down and came into the club the next day, we actually did a lot of things right and I think that's the way we're looking at it now," he said.

And on the game against Hawthorn this weekend, Richardson said maintaining defensive pressure would be the key to another win.

"They're nearly the benchmark after Geelong at the moment — they're playing good, structured team football, they're very well drilled in what they do and we're going to have to try and break down that structure," he said.

"We'll have to play our best football and keep our pressure and tackling up, which we have done the last few weeks but we need to do it this especially, I think to get across the line."

A few people have told me this too- but Dad is unaware of any involvement he will have in the celebrations at the moment.

Having said that, I am sure the club will approach him
