Leave it out. There's not one person on whatever coaching selection comittee they had who thought they'd play finals this year.

Knights wont be judged until his third season, and unlike wallace, I bet he wont be carrying around a wooden spoon after 3 years at the club.
It's well known that when applying for the Essendon job Knighter offered the board a more positive picture of where their list was at and didn't rule out a top 8 finish unlike Hardwick who was more pessimistic and as it turned out realistic. Remember last year Hird on footy classified midway through the year said people within the Essendon inner sanctum thought they were a top 4 side. That club is deluded.

Easy to inflate the membership figures when you don't separate ticketed and non-ticketed memberships  :whistle. If we did that we could say we have 38k and rising.

So they sacked Sheedy because they had a top 4 list?

Despite what the old wives say, it was time to renew and rebuild, and they took on the person they thought was good at developing a young group of players. No-one who has any say at Windy Hill thinks Knights is going to build a premiership side. They just think he can develop talent and take them a couple of 2 steps forward.

The rest is just rumor and speculation.

But how do you know that's what they thought 1980 any more than other speculation. That wasn't the word out of Essendon after Knighter's appointment and they sure weren't denying the top 8 talk after the NAB Cup until now that the proverbial has hit the fan. Even Rohan Connolly couldn't help himself back in March and tipped them to finish in the top 8. I agree 1980 it is time for them to renew and rebuild. I just don't believe they from their board down believed at the time their list was as bad as it is and they thought they didn't need to bottom out again a la 2006.

As for Sheeds - well apart from no finals in 3 years, poor recruiting since their last flag, and a perception they needed a younger coach like Knighter who could connect with Gen-Y, they sacked Sheeds with 6 still games to go because Voss was making coaching noises and they knew 3 other clubs searching for a new coach were interested in him also. They panicked.

Btw they were sitting 4th after round 11 last year when Hird was on Footy Classified. Scraping just a 2 point win against the poor old Dees out of the next 5 games and falling outside the top 8 would've changed their mind.

They always knew there'd be a long period of acclimitasing to "life after sheedy", which is why they took longer than they should have to sack him.

Every single person at that club knows it will take more than a couple of seasons to learn to live without sheedy.

Knighter will be a good coach, but wont last there too long. Lets hope he doesnt become another Balme, Malthouse or dare I say it, Sheedy who refuses to have anything to do with us because when he was at another club, we slammed the door shut

Yep Knighter has taken on a list that will take years to rebuild and that will get worse before it gets better with Fletcher, Michael, Lloyd and Lucas 30 or older. Ryder is a gem but their other KP options they put their faith in like Bradley who has gone and Johns are duds. Gumbleton has torn his hammy about 4 times in the space of 12 months so there's no guarantee on him either.

As for Sheeds and Malthouse, we opened the door and they shut it back in our faces. Sheeds just used us time and time again to get another contract at Bomberland. He couldn't do it one last time once our board decided to stick with Wallace for 5 years.

Sheeds had his chance to coach us, he decided not to. That's history.

If we ever were to change coaches, I'd like to have Chris Bond in the equation as well.
Seems to have been overlooked but he gets good cred from most observers.
