Status of senior players currently outside best XXII
« on: April 27, 2008, 01:20:36 AM »
How do you rate the older players who are not currently in the side?

Bowden -
Tivendale -
Pettifer -
*Cogs -
Howatt
Silvester -
Cartledge -

Last 3 being rookies.

Bowden you would think is too talented to not get back into the side if we lose a few.
I hope Tivendale and Howatt are delisted ASAP. Both strugglers who need to be moved on.
Hopfully Silvester loses his spot at years end with the development of Rance/Gourdis.
Cartedge would be our 3rd best ruckman atm, ahead of Graham/Putt.

Bowden - Good player. Unsure if his style of play is a good fit for us anymore.

Tivendale - Good VFL player

Pettifer - Good player but Morton has his spot for mine. I would trade him.

*Cogs - Been so long don't know where he fits. We always seem to play better with him though. Hope he can get it together and is not too slow.

Howatt - Tries really hard, I like and admire him for that. Was good early this season but probably sitting about 23 - 24 on the list and there are a raft of younger kids who will pass him very soon.

Silvester - Dunno. Seems slow.

Cartledge - Dunno. Sounds OK from what I have read about Coburg, but until he pays seniors a bit hard to tell.

Chris Judd - is a handy player.

How do you rate the older players who are not currently in the side?

Bowden - May come back in within the next few weeks but more as a forward/off the bench player. His days as a key component of our 22 are over.

Tivendale - Gone. May come in if injuries hit but will spend his time mostly at Coburg.

Pettifer - In massive trouble. Morton has taken his spot, does 99% more defensively and is 4 years younger.

*Cogs - We'll probably know for sure by round 22. A football tradegy if he never makes it back  :(.

Howat - VFL player.

Silvester - Just cheap back up in case we lose defenders to long-term injury

Cartledge - Just cheap back up in case we lose Simmo to long-term injury. Allow Gus and Putty to develop in their own time.

Bowden -   Cancer of the footy club. The club is bigger than him and the writing has been on the wall for years. Two best and fairests in a very weak side is hardly inspiring. His ability to self promote himself and his style of play to rack up meaningless possessions without the hint of a contest or human touch has been both phenomenal and grandiose. The type of combative hard tackling accountable type of football Terry has had the side playing recently is indicative of what Joel has not been right throughout his AFL career and hence the transition to this style of footy has coincided with his omission from the senior side. Will make a worthy best and fairest winner at Coburg and that B & F will be worth so much more than the 2 Jack Dyer's he won at Richmond in 04 and 05. If ever there was a mole at Punt Rd he was it. Hence the fact the media are never savage on him.
Status leave out of the 22. Period

Tivendale - Like so many of our players over the past 25 years, has won selection in an era when nobody better has been available to take their place. Outside player whose hardball stats can be counted on the same hand as Joel Bowden. Just like his left footed mate Joel a long left foot kick that has been very inconsistent. Could hit a 20 cent coin from 50 metres away on the run yet could miss a target the size of a 747 from 20 mtres away also. When things a re going great has tended to have his 20 odd touches yet when things go awry has tended to have his 10-15. Reality is he has stayed on the list far longer than required due to Frawley departure and Terry rebuild and now that the youth is beginning to prosper is taking his place.
Status keep till end of season and promote when opp arises due to injury or suspension but only in a limited capacity. For the rebuild to be fruitful and worthwhile the kids have to be put in front of players of the ilk of Tivvers. Gone at the end of the year.

Pettifer - Does not put his body on the line. Does not work hard enough. Does not have a defensive side. Is way way too selfish. Needs to look at Mitch Morton's game today and try and change his style. In previous years all clubs have needed a receiving type selfish forward in their team but ever since Aaron Davey has come to the AFL this has changed as the HFF forward pocket forward has needed to pressure tackle dig in get dirty win the hard ball as well as kick goals. The first few points Petts is not proficient in at all.
Status see out his contract whether at Coburg or Richmond and will be trade bait as still quite young at 24 or 25 and might be worth a third rounder.

*Cogs - Injuries have ruined him unfortunantely. Was being groomed as the face of the club and possibly a future captain. Terry mentioned on before the game he will play for Coburg. Hopefully all goes okay for the boy but he has 16 weeks to saty fit and get into the Richmond side whilst proving he has the capacity to handle the rigors and speed of the new game plan.
Status due to injury he may not be at the club next year whether by trade or delisting which is a shame as this time 5 years ago we thought we had a real gem before his subsequent knee injuries. I hope he proves me wrong but right now this is where we stand and the club needs to move forward with or without Cogs. Football tragedy nonetheless if he fails to make it back.

Howat -  Too one sided and his disposal at times can be awful. Is fit and can handle the pace of the game but his disposal is a major worry.
Status- Can still have an impact at the senior level but only in minor roles. Better skilled youngsters are awaiting their chance to take his place. Suspension from rd 1 game certainly would not have helped his cause. Overall a good VFL player.

Silvester - Too slow too cumbersome for senior level.
Status- Too slow too cumbersome at senior level. Lack of pace will be severley exposed at AFL level.

Cartledge -After the ruck duties fell on the young but broad shoulders of Patto last year, Tristan was merely a panic selection, insurance policy if Simmo's blood clot was more serious than initially anticipated in order to help Patto in the ruck duties. Didn't do all that much at Essendon and will struggle to get a spot at Richmond.
Status- Has AFL experience with the Bombers but opportunities are limited at the moment at RFC. Second string ruckman at best and with Patto playing that role with aplomb after his tough initiation last year may find opportunites about as rare as hens teeth.
