A lesson in premiership footy
« on: May 17, 2008, 06:29:30 PM »
Cats are just in another league but we knew that already.

Brave first 50 minutes. Came to play, matched them in contested footy and went long and direct in the wet which put their defence under pressure. They then started winning centre clearance after centre clearance just before half-time and we got totally smashed in the 3rd with Chapman, Ling, Ablett and Corey cutting us to pieces. We just couldn't get the ball as their bigger bodies stood up and they dominated the corridor. Forced us through their pressure to go short and wide in wet conditions which made up cough up errors. We played out the game to keep it to a respectable scoreboard loss but we were given a lesson after half-time.

Yep, was pretty disappointing to see that we couldn't maintain it in the second half. They worked way harder than we did, had numbers at every contest, had free men running hard and went harder at the ball.

10-15 minutes in the 3rd was the game breaker.

Simple as that really

Agree jezza and WP.

They certainly exposed our deficiencies - we need a 200+cm ruckman, another big KPP and more midfield depth to play out 4 quarters.

I was "oh so close" to donning me beanie ;D

Look disappointed that we lost again but the fact that they battled it out was a good sign. When they gor 40+ points up in the last I thought we goona cop a 10+ goal drubbing
But we didn't

Have to say the match up on Jnr Ablett failed....

Really what else did we expect, liked the first 1/2, Geelong showed us what it was all about in the 3rd.

Yep, Hyde was disappointing after his recent form as a stopper.

Smashed in the ruck which really hurt, don't think we can afford to go in without Patto anymore.

Still got too many light bodies compared to Geelong, got pushed off the ball regularly.

Probably most disappointing was the lack of work rate given a couple of weeks off. Back line had lots of trouble getting the ball out because there were never any options to go to.

Dont know about a lesson in premiership footy

They won. Thats all.

We did OK but couldnt lift a gear in the 2nd half. that will come with stronger bodies and more experience.

IMO we continued the progress since the Freo game.

Geelong are overrated.

geelong as they have done all yr won another game just by playing 25 minutes of real good umpire assisted footy

found it amazing how the umps pull out these bs free kicks for holding gablett selwood and chapman , yet foley is being held all day !

it took to the last 10 minutes when the game was dusted for the umps to finally gie foley and sugar frees for being held, but when it counted , they neve rcame, but the precioua ablett always gets looked after

we did well v the premiers, remember last yr we were last, we were beaten by thi steam by 157 and then by 60/70 odd, this time it was 30 ponts but really just one quarter.

we are developing and i hope the boys keep their heads up as the signs are real good good

Geelongs turn of the game in the 3rd was purely the tag of Ablett getting on top of Hyde,  which l thought Hyde did a good job most of the day on actor Ablett who was playing to get free kicks. Hyde has taken on some huge tasks recently & none harder than one of the most explosive players off the mark in the league & who is in Brownlow winning form & very hard to stop by all other 14 clubs
Corey was running wild & should have been maned up
Chapman got on top & started acting to umpires
The umpires being stooged by Geelong players who are stuntmen than footballers at times
Our poor decision making & errors, the  turnovers that cost goals & not punching the ball away in defence
& the most important our sluggish tackling trying to grab players without putting thier bodies on the line,  No bodyweight when tackling is pure crap from us
Not knowing how to kickout from defence & not putting boot to ball quick enough many times in the backline
if Newman can kick half the ground kicking out from a point in the wet weather, why did the coach not tell him to do it all day it would have made the end result lower
we were forced to makes mistakes when the option should have been blast it long & force a contest up the ground thats all geelong did, we lost the game ourselves because of our lack of skills & decision making

You mean like Freddy Swift?

Somehow I think the game has moved on - I luv it but I think the tactic is only for shock value - it's basically a 50/50 ball.

In perfect conditions you would be right, but yesterday it was absolute belting, and gaining distance is imperative to making things happen. Everyone should have taken a leaf out of Newy's book, especially McMahon and gone for distance rather than be cute. Look at Geelong, on countless occasions you saw them go long rather than pinpoint targets, and this produced a heap of opportunites at ground level.
