Tigers vs Swans

Tigers clear first hurdle, set sights on Swans
Rebecca Williams | May 26, 2008

RICHMOND forward Nathan Brown says the Tigers must start winning against teams in the top eight if they are to prove they are turning the corner.

The Tigers' 38-point win against Essendon on Saturday night was their third of the season - already equalling their season tally from last year.

Despite a third-quarter lapse that allowed the Bombers to cut a 50-point halftime deficit in half, Brown said he was encouraged by the signs the Tigers were showing.

"Our tackle pressure and our intensity around the footy has been terrific. We are the No. 1 hardball and contested football side in the competition at the moment," Brown said.

"Our pressure and our contested football are the two things that probably got us playing good football.

"We were playing good without winning games. It's good to have good form, but if it goes too long, you don't get the thrill of winning, and you need to still learn how to win.

"But now we have got to start beating sides above us. We have to start beating sides that are in the eight if we want to make the eight."

Brown's comments echoed those post-match of coach Terry Wallace, who said his group was showing signs of maturity, but the team needed to take the next step.

"Guys like Shane Edwards and Trent Cotchin getting their hands on the ball, Matty White - that's the nucleus of the future of the footy club, and that looked pretty good," Wallace said.

"The next thing is to be able to do it for four quarters, and the other factor is doing it against the better sides in the competition."

The Tigers will have the chance to test themselves next Sunday when they meet Sydney at the SCG.

"We played them in the pre-season, and as far as respect goes, you could not have any more respect for a club than Sydney. It will be a great challenge for us," Brown said.

For his own part, Brown showed signs of returning to his pre-broken leg form with three goals and 23 disposals, although his inaccuracy (four behinds) let him down.

But he is enjoying feeling fit and injury-free for the first time in three years.

"I started the year slow with the first couple of weeks, but since then it's been pretty good," Brown said.

"I was a bit crook last week and didn't do much, but it was good to play some good football (on Saturday night).

"I missed a few goals which I probably should have kicked, but you've got to take the good with the bad.

"Certainly it's a great feeling to feel injury-free. This year I feel fit for the first time in three years, so it's exciting."

Nathan Foley is another Tiger clearly enjoying his hot streak.

Foley again starred for the Tigers, earning best-on-ground honours in the Dreamtime at the 'G clash for his 32-possession game.

"It was a great honour, especially in this tribute match," Foley said.

"It's really starting to build with great crowds. So it was great to win and I'm just enjoying getting a few kicks."

Our 3 wins have been against bottom 8 sides (how we lost that game to the Saints  :scream). A step up now over the next 2 weeks playing two top 8 sides and another chance to see where we are at. So far North and the Pies rolled us easily, the off-target Hawks were pushed and we drew with the Dogs.

The Swans are our real test: Wallace

The Swans are our real test: Wallace
abc.net.au & Sportal

Richmond coach Terry Wallace says his team's upcoming clash with the Sydney Swans will prove whether they are finals contenders.

The Tigers defeated the Bombers in the last round, however despite good performances they are yet to come away with a win against a top side.

Wallace says the upcoming game is a real gauge on his side.

"If you're going to improve and get yourself up into the position where you want to be vying for the eight, you want to be testing yourself out against those sides," he said.

"So you know what is stacking up for you, and what is not, as a footy team."

The Tigers' recent record against Sydney - they have lost their past four since a one-point win at the MCG in 2005 - might be poor but Wallace is buoyed ahead of Sunday's trip by the club's recent record on the road.

Not only have the Tigers already thrashed Fremantle in Perth in their only previous interstate home and away game this season but they also beat Melbourne in Cairns and Sydney in Narrandera during the pre-season.

"They don't mean anything but we have played well when we have travelled over the season so far and I think our (playing) group quite enjoys getting away together and spending a bit of time together," Wallace said.

This game will give us a insight how we are going as a team & how good Wallace can coach with several game plans he will need.
Forget about practice matches of past pre season, the Swans will be out there to bury us Sunday in a big 1st quarter l predict
l dont expect the guys to win this game but l hope they give it a real red hot go again
l class the Swans as a very well drilled side who can pound the goals early to create a lead & then close the game down perfectly to stop attacking sides or vice versa.
A win would be great for the club & the playing group if we can bring this game home moral will lift :gotigers
hope our supporters can showup & give them a roar of courage  :thumbsup

Agree with all that TM.

Last year with an obviously poorer side struggling we overpossessed the footy up there. You can't do that at the SCG and there's no need to. Apply the K.I.S.S. principle and go direct down the corridor. Also with the forward line we have named with Bowden, Petts plus Richo, Lids and even Newy pushing forward hopefully we can kick some long goals  from outside "50" to break open the shutdown style of the Swans.

No Bazza Hall is also bonus as he's been too big a gorilla for our young backline in the last few meetings.

It's still shorter than other grounds and the new stands aren't (doh :-[) finished.

SCG: 149 metres x 136 metres
MCG: 160 metres x 141 metres
Dome: 159.5 metres x 128.8 metres
ANZ:  160 metres x 118 metres
AAMI: 165 metres x 133 metres
Subi:  175.6 metres x 122.4 metres

Not as silly as it seems. Newy keeps them fairly straight too.

I think the SCG is longer that 149 metres since the renovations have been finished.  The 50 metre arcs don't touch the centre square any more (if they really are 50 metres).  There is a gap of about 3 metres between the centre square and the 50 metre arc, so I would guess that between the goal lines, the ground would have to be about 156 metres long.

The SCG site has the "Radius of goal arc" as 45m (what the?) and the centre square at 50m with the "distance from goal line to goal line" as 149m.

Which would put 2m between the square and each 45m arc.
