Deliberate Out Of Bounds?
« on: June 10, 2008, 04:38:01 PM »
I was watching the Yarrawonga V Wodonga game last weekend, it was a close game only a couple of kicks in it and nearly time for the final siren. A Yarrawonga player was surrounded by opposition and the only option he had was to force a behind. He got knocked sideways and ended up handballing out of bounds instead. The umpire called a throw in, the crowd called for blood.  What was the correct call?

There should have been bleeding, 2JD.

Maybe the umpire thought the ball was knocked out of his hands?

Yes it was. The player was playing the ball disposed of it and it went out of bounds. If he was surrounded by opponents on the wing and the same thing occurred the umpire would have made the same decison so why should he change it and give a free b/c its close to goal. Of course the decision will be different from one ump to the next.

It's an actual rule. If you try to rush a behind but miss and the ball goes out of bounds instead, it is deliberate out of bounds.

If that's the case then the attacking side was short changed. Hope it wasn't game deciding.

Yep it should have been a free kick to the attacking side according to the rules.

I hate the deliberate out of bounds rules btw as it's russian roulette when it's paid and like the above example what is a defender expected to do sometimes when there's no other option. I can't remember which Tiger it was on the weekend (might have been Kingy) but he was pinged for deliberate as he handballed it out while tackled. About 5 minutes later Douglas of Adelaide just taps it straight out of bounds with an open palm yet no free  :banghead.

Thanks people. It wasnt knocked out of his hands FF he was bumped off his original line, so the ball went wrong side of the post, and It could have been game deciding in that it threw the attacking side off the momentum it had built up. Not caring which side won, I could just stand back and watch the anger erupt it was spine tingling lol :cheers
