But the coaching move of the season has to be Terry Wallace's inspired use of Matthew Richardson.

It took a while (five coaches, 15 seasons and up until "Richo" turned 33) to work out how to get the best out of the big fellow.

Alternating between wing and full-forward has done the trick. Richo now has freedom to use his great athleticism. He is no longer out of the game for extended periods, when frustration would build. He doesn't feel as though he has to kick a bag of goals to be of value to his team.

The opposition finds him harder to match up on when he plays several roles and he gets to use up all the juice in his tank. On Sunday, Richo was one of two players who never left the ground.

He kicked the most goals (five), took the most marks (18) and had 21 disposals. In short, his coach allowed him to maximise his talents for the benefit of the team.

Why did most of the Richmond supporting fraternity know this for a large part of those 15 years yet it took 5 'learned scholars' of the game until now?

But seriously, we all know he has tactics overall that beat most but what about the player management and skills coaching?

Terry is like the coach in NBA 2008 dynasty that has A+ in one area but then C- in another so you don't really know if they'll be great overall or whether you just get the coach but has solid Bs for overall work.

Northey played Richo as a roaming HFF with Gale at CHF and poor Jurica or Edwards at FF so his first senior coach knew how to use him that was benefical to Richo and the team. I can understand Walls playing Richo at FF in Richo's first year back from a knee and kicking 91 goals but once Richo showed he hadn't lost any of his mobility and agility he should've been allowed off the leash again.

He played in D 50 on Sunday if you care to look

Lets face it, if it wasnt for Richo, we would never of beat Melbourne.
And Giesch did play him on a wing, oh how people forget.
He played him CHB as well.

What about when other teams chip it sideways?

Watched part of the Geelong game on Sunday before visiting the twilight zone  and they chipped sideways a few times. Port Adelaide are known for it.

Maybe it has something to do with execution or something else

He did rds 14-17 in 1999. He had free reign to go where he wanted. The great man went Bezerk against Freo in Perth the winning goal kicked by Ben Hollands,West Coast at the G  on a Friday night  when the Eagles were top of the ladder and Melbourne at the G. Then he got injured and missed the rest of the year. Kicked 20 goals in 3 or 4 games. Can remember Spud did that also in rd 4 2000 against Freo at the dome in a game we lost by a point. Richo kicked 6 and we lost by a point. Poor bloke missed the rest of the year with a stress fracture and he was flying for those that recall.

I dont beleive its the best effective way to play modern football.
You will find they ""usually "" play very direct and do play on at all costs. Fast transitional movement of the ball is extremely important in today football. As you would of seen Lids in the 2nd quarter do just that, play on at all costs and play direct football.
When you do go sideways as we usually do, this allows the opposition to push back, as so what happend against us.
We all seen what occurred for 15 mins in the 2nd quarter on Sunday night, then we went back to our old habits

Richo has been played up the ground in fits and starts over his career. Up until this year, the problem was Richo's decision making up the field hurt us - hospital handballs and dumb kicks. this year he looks more self assured and comfortable. Maybe they practiced with him over summer. Whatever happened its really really working.
