Jack in the box
Dermott Brereton

WITH a bit more than half a season gone, it’s an opportune time to reflect on the players who have come from the clouds and astounded us, and those who have failed to live up to our expectations.

Some may not have played much, but have shown enough to raise eyebrows. And some may have played most games, but have failed to excite.

This list has nothing to do with total games played, it’s purely an opinion based on what I’ve witnessed.

HEROES

JAKE KING

ALTHOUGH he had a good 2007 season, his 2008 has been even better.

King is not the best player at Richmond but in only his second full season, he is undeniably the pulse of the team. In past years Joel Bowden would win the ball deep in defence and cautiously, even laconically, kick sideways to an unmarked teammate. The Tigers would then amble forward, hoping to select a target by foot and penetrate the opposition.

King takes it on himself to rush through the opposition in a frantic run. The Bowden style bred pacifism within the team. The King style has bred urgency and risk-taking.

We're missing Kingy's tanacity and spirit. He is a little fighter who never backs down and its a great role model for all of our team. His run out of defense sets up a lot of goals for us and with his out for the next couple of weeks will hurt us.   :(

If Bowden had King's heart tenacity and spirit added to that skill by foot he has he would be an out and out champion. There I said it for all those out there who cringe in disbelief over my Bowden bashing BUT Joel uses that skill as a detriment to the team and exclusively as a benefit to himself and if it favours the team then it is merely a side effect. Joel is laxadazical egotistical with a bad attitude when it comes to getting a hard ball hence he has the heart of a pea and that will be the legacy he will leave when the day comes for him to retire. Give me Kingy any day over Joel. Would rather have a bloke giving is all even in futility than have a bloke give 50% in a futile situation and then front the media as a team spokesperson or so called leader and then claim that overall the team performance was unacceptable. Fraudulence at its best.

I think he is a better forwad pocket, his desperation would keep the ball in our forward line and open up more opertunities for crumming goals instead of teams rebounding out of our forward line once the ball hits the deck. Either way we look a better team when he is in it.

I'm not a card carrying member of the homosexual community so I can't speak on their behalf, but I doubt they'd want him on their team either
