RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace has underlined the importance of Saturday's blockbuster against Carlton, calling it a "line in the sand" clash.

The Tigers are using the game to celebrate their club centenary and will hold a gala function the night before.

They are also starting to generate some momentum with successive wins over Melbourne and Port Adelaide.

Carlton had been in strong mid-season form, but gave up its spot in the top eight with Sunday's loss to Essendon.

The two clubs will have their round-14 break after Saturday, and Wallace said the Tigers are determined to take a three-game winning streak into the spell.

"It's been a great build-up with the results of the last couple of weeks," Wallace said.

"We were under a lot of pressure a couple of weeks ago.

"Obviously it's a line in the sand with a week off.

"It would be great for our club to get to the break with three [wins] in a row."

Captain Kane Johnson, Daniel Jackson, Will Thursfield and Jake King could all be available for selection as they recover from their injuries.

We should win this game but when you start to look at their stars I start to get a little edgy.

To beat them we need to stop Fev & Kruezer in the F50, restrict Judd and Betts and expose their backline.

If we can do all that we will win comfortably otherwise we have no hope of making the finals.

Wallace said his team must learn from Carlton's loss to the Bombers.

"Two weeks ago, everyone was sitting around here asking questions about my future at the football club and where things are going to be," Wallace said.

"All we've done in a matter of two weeks is alleviate that and set ourselves up for some better opportunities in the second half of the year.

"If we can learn one lesson from Carlton, they won a couple of games in a row and then, all of a sudden, fell on the weekend - that's the nature of this game."

Wallace went as far as calling Saturday a "line in the sand" game, due to the week off.

Wallace said Richmond had been "spasmodic" in the last two games, showing some outstanding form, but not maintaining it for more than a quarter.

"If I could ask for one thing, it would be to bring four quarters to the MCG on Saturday afternoon," he said.

The Tigers will draw on their storied history through this week, but Wallace stressed it was also up to this current team to start dragging Richmond out of the doldrums that they have suffered since their 1980 premiership.

He said Richmond had some "interesting" selection quandaries, with captain Kane Johnson, Will Thursfield, Daniel Jackson and Jake King all potentially available as they recover from injury.

Thursfield, if fit, is the No.1 option for rampaging Carlton full-forward Brendan Fevola.

Another potential opponent for Fevola is utility Joel Bowden, who racked up a career-high 39 disposals and took an amazing 23 marks against Port.

Bowden was dropped for four games earlier this season, but Wallace used him as a prime example in a lecture he gave the team about dealing with setbacks.

"I'm absolutely, extremely pleased and I'm about an hour away from giving a sermon to our other players, about not allowing things that you can't control to actually impact the way you handle yourself," Wallace said.

"So many players, whether it's in-game or from selection decisions, get emotionally involved in things that they can't really have any impact on whatsoever.

"That therefore impacts either their next action in a game or it impacts their ability to get back into a senior lineup - and I thought that's the thing Joel has handled better than anything else."

ALL TERRY Wallace wants for Christmas is four good quarters of footy. In the same game. And he'd like them now, thanks, no hanging about until the end of December.

Richmond has played good footy throughout the year, but inconsistent performances across games have led to them dropping at least a couple they should have won, and that means they're outside the eight.

The Tigers were at it again on the weekend, kicking a glorious nine goals in the first term against Port Adelaide before giving up the last four of the match to win by less than a straight kick, and the coach wants it to stop.

"We were under a lot of pressure a fortnight ago, and I think the players handled that as well as could be expected, and just got on with what they need to do, which is concentrate on playing footy and playing it to the best of their abilities," he said.

"Probably in the last couple of weeks we've had spasmodic performances – we've had some really good stuff, and our nine-goal first quarter on the weekend was as clean and as good as anything we've shown, and I think one of the better interstate performances we've had for some time.

"And the Melbourne game was a little bit similar – our second quarter was outstanding, but what we haven't done over the last fortnight is put together four quarters of footy.

"And I suppose that's the next challenge for a developing team."

Despite the final-term scare, Wallace said there was plenty of good to come out of the Port Adelaide game with various disciplines being observed.

"It's so many things – it's being truly responsible for playing two-way footy, it's hitting packs in the manner that they ought to be hit, whether that's marking contests or ground-ball stuff – I just think that that aspect of our game has been better.

"But it's only been better in portions of games still, so that's the challenge.

"If I could ask for one thing, it'd be bring four quarters to the MCG on Saturday afternoon."

Time we finally turned up and won one of these games we pump up before hand  .

A big win in a game against a club who currently is in a similar position to us will be great. We beat them in front of 72k earlier in the season so the big game atmosphere and hype can be overcome by the boys. Hopefully all the hype about the centenary won't distract the boys come match day. Will be huge event for the club and I am sure the players/ coaches will not let the club and fans down. Victory on Saturday is as much an achievement to the  current players as it is to past players and administrators from bygone eras and fans who have stuck through thick and thin and voluntary gave their all both physically emotionally and financially to allow us to reach our centennary in 1990 when we were "Saving Our Skins". Here's to another century and many more after that RFC. Love you till I die.

how huge is this game? i think there will be about 90k at the game judging on the limited tickets left.

The line in the sand game was that one b/w Hawthorn and Essendon in 2004 where they had that all-in melee. It was Richie Vandenberg's line. They still got flogged by 10 goals lol.
